About Metje Andries Grevenraet
"Saturday, May 10, 1664. Metje Grevenraat boards the son of Claas Martens dec"*, for 250 guilders per annum."
(there has been considerable study by genealogists as to the role of Metje Grevenraet's foster parenting of the Martens child. From what can be determined about the social standing of Metje and her siblings, the Grevenraets were of good standing in the community in those days. In particular: see her brother: Isaac Grevenraet who was a Schepen of New Amsterdam at the time of its surrender to the British
N.B. This child is most probably Nicholas Roosevelt, Sr. but may be his brother.
• in 1665 : a 4th rate citizen listed as a resident of Marketfield st. See: Affairs and Men of New Amsterdam: In the Time of Governor Peter Stuyvesant ...
By J. Paulding page 103
• appears in The 1667 Tax list of New York as a property owner: " Mattie Greverart " This is undoubtably her as the Grevenraet family owned so much property in the area of Marketfield St.
She may have lived with her brother Isaac who is shown on Marketfield St. on the Castello Plan.
Relationship w/Van Salee
Long before they married Metje lived a block away from Van Salee and his wife Grietje Reyniers; Metje on Marketfield and the Van Salees on Bridge St. (Brugh). ~• see: Castello Plan
