Mungo Mure of Rowallan is the son of John Mure of Rowallan: "Mongow succeided to his fayr Johne." House of Rowallane, page 79. His mother is Margaret Boyd. Register of the Privy Seal of Scotland, i, A.D. 1488-1529, charter number 3431 on p. 519

A date and place of birth has not been identified for Mungo Mure of Rowallan. He succeeded his father in or before 1513 and must have been born before this date. Exchequer Rolls of Scotland

Rowallan Castle

Mungo Mure of Rowallan made improvements at Rowallan Castle: "This Moungu Muire raisit ye hall vpone four vouttis [vaults] and laiche trance and compleitit the samen in his avin tyme." Family Tree, 1597 Sir William Mure translated this as: "He bigged the hall from the ground & completed it in his owne time. Historie, p. 81

Death

According to Sir William Mure of Rowallan, Mugow Mure of Rowallan was: "a man of singulare valour and verie worthie of his hands, qrof he gave good proofe in divers conflicts. He died in battell at the Black Satterday In the year of our lord 1547." The editor of Sir William's Historie explains: "The battle of pinkie-cleuch, so disastrous to the Scottish army, alling out on a Saturday, was long so emphatically called in Scotland." Marriage

Mungo Mure of Rowallan married Isabel Campbell, daughter of Sir Hugh Campbell of Loudon. Sir William Mure of Rowallan says this of the marriage: "He married Isobell Campbell daughter to the schereff of Aire whose mother was Wallace of the house of Carnell. She bare unto him Johne who succeided, Archibald of Arioland & Cotland, Mr Patrick, persone of ffarne, Hugh of Blacklaw & Skirnalland, and Robert And daughters the lady Enterkine, Lady Carnall, Lady Mochrum, Lady Baruchane, and Lady Dreghoen." 12 July 1526: Charter granted by King James V under his Great Seal in favour of Kentigern More of Rowallane and his heirs male whom failing to the eldest of his heirs female without division of those 5 merks of land of old extent of Blaklaw, 5 merks of land of Hairschaw, 6 merks of land of Corshillis, 6 merks of land then called the Clerkland, 40s of land of Cuttiswra and 5 merks of land of Ormesheuch extending together to 20lib of land of old extent which Margaret Boyd, Lady of Rowallan, mother of said Kentigern, held of the King in liferent by his letters under the Great Seal together with the King's mill of Clerkland lying in the lordship of Stewarton within the sheriffdom of Ayr; to be held of the King in feu farm, paying therefor yearly 44 pounds usual money of the kingdom, at two usual terms Whitsunday and Martinmas by equal portions in name of feu farm in augmentation of the rental of the foresaid lands and mill to 22 pounds yearly together with the marriage of the said heirs when this should happen and also the foresaid heirs paying double of the feu duty the first year of their entry thereto as use is of feu farm and the said Kentigern and his heirs building and upholding the said lands a sufficient house with hall, chamber, kitchen, stable etc and other necessary buildings and policies and corresponding to those which were formerly on the said lands reserving to the said Margaret her gift of liferent of the foresaid lands and mill and the profits of the same for the whole time of her life according to the tenor of the King's letter and gift under his Great Seal first made to her thereupon and exonering the said Kentigern and his heirs from payment of the feu duty during the life of his mother. 3 October 1545: Commission under the quarter seal for serving the brieves of Hugh, Master of Eglinton, as heir to his grandfather. Permission is given to hold the inquest in the burgh court house at Irvine because the plague was raging on those Cunningham lands of which he was to be given infeftment. Endorsed: William, lord Semple; Mungo Muir of Rowallan; Charles Mowat of Bushie; Thomas Nevin of Monkredding and Adam Montgomery of Murhous swear, in presence of Cardinal Betoun and others of the lords, to carry out the inquest.
