About Nathan Hicks, Indian Trader

Not the same as Nathan Hicks, of Surry County

(Curator Note: Due to claims about his relationships that affect the accuracy of known and documented Native Americans, this profile is being tracked and co-managed by Wikitree's Native Americans Project.)

A previous version of this profile claimed that Nathan, known son of Robert Hicks who left a bequest of five pounds to son Nathan in 1782,[1] was the same as the white trader and father of a Cherokee family with a wife known as "Nancy" or "Nan-he-hi".

But the Nathan Hicks, b 1743, son of Robert, is too young to have fathered Nanyehi's children. This Nathan Hicks has been detached as her spouse and as father of her children.
Some web sites also list him as the husband of a different Cherokee woman named Gosaduisga, but there is no documentation to support those claims. [2]

__________

NATHAN HICKS, b. 11-15-1743 in Brunswick Co., VA., son of Robert & Mary Hicks, was a fur trapper. He married Nancy Broom (Nan-ye-hi) dau. of Chief Broom (Cherokee). Their son, Charles R. Hicks, became Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. Later Charles' brother, William Hicks, became Chief. He had a son WILLIAM HICKS, of about the right period to be my ancestor.
My ancestor WILLIAM HICKS, "jumped ship" as the Trail of Tears crossed southern Missouri ca 1835. He worked "at the mill" in Morgan County, MO. My grandfather told me that he stayed with his grandfather, William Hicks, "while his father James, was away at the Civil War". He told me that his grandfather, William, was part Cherokee and had the same name as his... William.

Children of WILLIAM HICKS are:
2. i. MARY JANE2 HICKS, b. 1828, Tennessee; d. Deceased.
3. ii. JAMES HICKS, b. Abt. 1830, Missouri; d. October 31, 1866, Ray Co., Missouri.
