A previous version of this profile claimed that Nathan, known son of Robert Hicks who left a bequest of five pounds to son Nathan in 1782,[1] was the same as the white trader and father of a Cherokee family with a wife known as "Nancy" or "Nan-he-hi".
But the Nathan Hicks, b 1743, son of Robert, is too young to have fathered Nanyehi's children. This Nathan Hicks has been detached as her spouse and as father of her children.
Some web sites also list him as the husband of a different Cherokee woman named Gosaduisga, but there is no documentation to support those claims. [2]

Children named/referenced in Robert Hicks 1782 will (in this order):
- Nathan [bequest of five pounds]
- Daughter who married Paul Tatum [some say she was Elinor]
- Daughter who married Benjamin Bass [some say she was Martha or Sarah]
- Mary Hicks, single as of 1782
- Daughter, m James Vaughan
- Daughter, m James Bruce
- Daughter, m Lewis Peebles
- Tabitha Hicks, single in 1782
From a transcription of his will,[5] the following are probably the daughters and sons-in-law of Robert Hicks (1782):
"...Paul Tatum, Mary Hicks, Tabitha Hicks, James Vaughan, James Bruce and Lewis Peebles, and lastly I constitute and appoint my son-in-law Paul Tatum my whole and sole executor...
son Nathan and son-in-law Benjamin Bass are also named in the will.
Which daughter was married to Tatum, Vaughan, Bruce, Peebles, and Bass is not stated in the will.

[The fact that Nathan was willed money instead of land supports the idea that he was not in Virginia, but in Georgia. LS. Note that Robert of John was willed the land in Surry/Sussex county, his brothers the land in Brunswick county, and Robert ended up in Brunswick county. LS.]
[Item] For NATHAN [3] I have two conflicting wives 1) Nayehi Wolf (Indian lass) and 2) Ruth Bugg- which seems right.
