About Nicholas de Meriet
Founder of family De Meriet
Meriet of Meriet by B. W. Greenfield 1883 p. 103. Roger, Bishop of Sarum gave two hides of the Abbey lands at Atram, Dorset in marriage, with his niece to Nicholas de Meriet without permission of the Convent. Nicholas, his wife & son Henry held this land without rendering any service to the Abbey. This is embodied in the return of the knight's fees held by the Abbey in 1166, wherein the then Abbott certifies that-being unable to recover service from Nicholas de Meriet and his wife and Henry their son - he granted, by arrangement, the same land to this Henry the son, and his heirs, subject to the service of half a knight's fee [Lib. Nig. i. 76]. His descendant John de Meriet still held this land in 1375.
Paid "scutage" 1162 [towards the King's wars] & 1167 [marriage of the King's daughter Maud].
Nicholas was dead before 1171 as in that year we find his son in possession, and therefore of full age. [Lib. Nig. i. 93].
