About Paul Heyns SV/PROG 2

Paul HEYNS was gebore in Leipzig in 1655.

Maria was 'n vorige slavin.

Note by Lodewyk Christiaan 'Chris' Steyn

The above list of children raises some questions in my mind. Since Paul married Maria Schalk only in 1696, I wonder who was the mother of the first few of Paul's children. The date of birth that I have of Maria Schalk is 1680, so she would have been five years old when the first listed child, Sara, was born.

[Her birth date has been updated to 23 SEP 1664, making her 21 years old when Sara HEYNS was born].

Heraldry of South African Families / Coats of arms, crests, ancestry by C.PAMA/ A. A. Balkema, 1972

EKSTEEN. Gules, a triangle, the point in base, and a chief, both argent. Crest: five ostrich feathers (seal 322).

On the wax impression the letters H. E. are placed in the chief and it seems, therefore, that the arms were used by Hendrik Oostwald Eksteen, fr. Lobenstein, b. 1678, d. 23.9.1741. Arr. 1702, burgher 1704, a.o. member of the Burgher Council and the Orphan Chamber, owner of the farms 'Lobenstein' and 'Elsjeskraal', who died a wealthy man. [166] Marr. (1) 13.7.1704 Sara Heyns, d.o. Paul Heyns; (2) 21.1.1717 Everdina Cruywagen; (3) 19.2.1719 Alida van der Heyden (18 children). [167] Some members of this family bear the following arms: argent, three lozenges azure. Crest: a lozenge azure between a pair of wings argent.

Page 322 Ref. notes 166 and 167

166: A wax impression with the same arms is also in the genealogical collections of the late Dr. F. W. F. Purcell, Cape Town. The arms dhown in figs. 245, 293 and 294 obviously belong to other families whose seals got into the wrong hands are not Eksteen. In the Coll. of seals, Govt. Arch. Cape Town is also an impression of an Arabic seal, used by Johannes Petrus Eksteen at Cassembazaar, 1758 to seal a letter to his uncle, J. H. Blanckenberg. Acc. to BR 22.2.1946 the arms are: 'blou skild in twee verdeel deur 'n goue chevron; onder is drie wit ringe, gerangskik een en twee'. This is evidently copied from the Dutch Eksteens; azure, a chevron or, in base three ammulets argent placed 1 and 2 (AG).

167: For the first generations of this family: 'Familia' 1969, 31 and 1970, 91.
