About Peter D. Little
GEDCOM Note
The Record of Morgan County, Kentucky marriages lists Peter Little who married Hannah Minton, the 24 Mar 1824 or 20 May 1824. This marriage date is years after the births of many of their children. According to Ruby Elrod, for some time, researchers felt these older children were born out-of-wedlock. She states that Hannah was said to be Cherokee Indian, and they were married by tribal custom in Virginia. Leo W. Little states, "It's possible the term "Cherokee marriage" was a euphemism for common-law marriage in the early 1800s. This would have been perfectly acceptable on the frontier when churches and government officials were few and far between."
When the family moved to Floyd County, Kentucky, the government did not recognize their marriage, and they had to remarry in order to get a land grant.
Ruby also states that Peter, on a census, lists his birthplace as North Carolina.
Ruby Elrod states the Mintons lived in Washington County, Virginia, and that Hannah may have been born there.
