About Peter Mountague, of Nansemond
Biography
Peter Montague III [also spelled Mountague] was born between 1631 and 1638 in Upper Norfolk County, Virginia (later Nansemond County), to Peter Montague (d. 1659) and his first wife.
He married before 1665 to Mary Doodes Minor, daughter of Meindert (Minor) Doodes and his wife Mary, who were living in Nansemond County in 1656. Meindert was a dutch sea captain who settled in Virginia. She was baptized as Maritje Meijnderts in 1645 at Amsterdam, Netherlands, but is better known in history as Maria Minor.
Peter and Mary Montague later lived on a plantation located on Montague Island in Middlesex County, Virginia, between the Rappahannock River and Mud Creek.
Peter died before 2 Dec. 1695, when his sons Peter IV and William, on behalf of themselves and their sisters Elizabeth and Catherine petitioned the Middlesex court for a division of five slaves "given by Mindret Dodes to the children of Peter Montecough, deceased, after their mother's death."
Peter Montague and Maritje Meinerts were the parents of the following children:
- 1. Mary Montague, b. 1662 (m. Thomas Payne).
- 2. Peter Montague, b. 1666 (m. Elizabeth Merry).
- 3. William Montague, b. 1670 (m. Lettice Weekes).
