About Petter Dass

Petter Peitersen Dass

Petter Dass (born ca. 1647, died September 18, 1707) was a priest in Alstahaug, Nordland, Norway, and the foremost Norwegian poet of his generation, writing baroque hymns and topographical poetry. Most of his writings were not published until after his death. Continue Wikipedia: English, Norsk (bokmål)‬

The profile image is a painting from 1684 in Melhus church, which traditionally is used as an image of Petter Dass. Wuen Andreas Emil Erichsen 1874–77 published Petter Dass' Samlede Skrifter a woodcut/xylografi of this painting was used, and have since then been the model most paintings, sculptures and illustrations of Petter Dass. However, in some published articles around 2000 by Kåre Hansen gave good arguments that the painting, still hanging in the church of Melhus, cannot be of Petter Dass. Hansen arguments that it is probably a painting of Oluf Mentzen Darre, which was a church minister of Melhus 1665–93.

His year of birth is a guesstimate based on the following information: His parents was probably married in 1645 and got 5 children. A chest with his parents initials and this year is mentioned in the probate record for him. By law Petter had to be 25 years when applying for becoming a minister in the church summer of 1671 (after 1646). In the 1701 Male census Petter Dass gave his age to 54 years (1647).

The date of death was given in a letter from the minister of Nesna, Johan Hanssøn Klæbo, dated October 20 1716. He was buried, according to the parish records of Brønnøy, 13th Sunday after trinitatis, which is September 18, 1707.
