About Pte. Albert Henry Austin
Albert Henry Austin was born at Ōamaru in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island on 22 August 1895 (reg. 1895/8408). His parents were Albert William Austin and Jane Austin (née Lindsay) who had married in New Zealand in 1885. During World War I Albert served with the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion. He saw action during the bloody and brutal allied invasion of Gallipoli (now Gelibolu) during which 2,779 New Zealand soldiers were killed and another 5,212 wounded. Albert was later serving in France when he was killed in action at the Somme on 28 March 1918 during the Battle of Saint-Quentin (21 March to 5 April 1918). 22-year-old Albert is remembered on Panel 4 of the Grévillers New Zealand Memorial.
