About Pte. Andrew Mowat Manson

Andrew Mowat Manson (aka. Andrew Mouat Manson) was born at Riverton in the Southland area of New Zealand's South Island in March of 1881. He was the son of Donald Manson and Barbara Manson (née Barclay) who had married in the Woodland Church at Longbush, Southland, on 9 December 1867. Andrew attended the Lower Shotover School in Otago. During the Anglo Boer War (1899-1902) he served with the 8th contingent. Andrew served again during World War I, with the Otago Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion. 36-year-old Andrew was killed in action at Ypres and buried in the Hooge Crater Cemetery [VIA. C. 13.]. Bio by Debbie McCauley (8 August 2024).

Private Andrew Manson, reported missing from 3rd December, left N.Z. with the 28th Reinforcements, so that he could not have been in the trenches more than a month or so. He was born in the Old Country [incorrect, born NZ - Ed.] but at an early age came out to New Zealand with his parents. He received his education at the Lower Shotover school, his father being at that time manager of Kawarau Falls Station for the Loan and Mercantile Agency, Ltd. At the time of bis enlistment Private Manson was manager, for the Public Trust, of Duke Bros' estate, Creighton, and was also a partner with his brother, John Manson, in a station at the Branches. Private Manson took part in the South African war, going out from N.Z as a member of the 8th contingent. His age is 37 years. Source: Lake County Press (10 January 1918, p. 5).
