About Pte. Arthur Harold McCoy
Arthur Harold McCoy was born at Lawrence in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island on 4 April 1877 (reg. 1877/5700). He was the son of barrister and solicitor Frederick Henry McCoy and Mary Ann Ellen McCoy (nee Thompson) who had married at St Paul's in Dunedin on 16 December 1870. Frederick died in Lawrence on 17 October 1887 when Arthur was just 10 years old. Arthur became a Master Mariner. He and Edith Florence Blackford married in 1906 (reg. 1906/5657), and daughter Thora Iris McCoy was born in 1907 (reg. 1907/9669). Arthur served with the Canterbury Infantry Battalion during World War I (Service No. WWI 6/1354). He was wounded in action at Cape Helles in Gallipoli and died of his wounds at the 88th Field Ambulance. 38-year-old Arthur was buried in the Lancashire Landing Cemetery.
