About Pte. Bernard Herbert Monk
Bernard Herbert Monk was born at Pipiriki in the Manawatū-Whanganui region of New Zealand's North Island on 10 June 1893 (reg. 1893/7259). His parents were George Herbert Monk and Margaret Teresa Monk (née Connor) who had married in New Zealand on 11 March 1885 (reg. 1885/436). During World War I Bernard served with the Wellington Infantry Battalion (Service No. WWI 10/459) along with his brother George Francis Monk. The brothers were together in a trench at Gallipoli when Bernard tried to assist a wounded comrade and was shot in the head and killed on 7 May 1915. Bernard is remembered on the Wellington Infantry Regiment Panel on the Twelve Tree Copse New Zealand Memorial in Gallipoli. His brother George was wounded at Gallipoli on 15 August 1915, taken prisoner of war, released following Armistice, and returned to New Zealand in 1919. Bio by Debbie McCauley (15 October 2024).
