About Pte. Charles McAulay
Charles MacAulay was born at South Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland on 25 August 1884. His parents were John MacAulay (b. 1848 South Uist) and Ann MacAulay (b. 1851, South Uist). According to the 1891 and 1901 Scotland Census his siblings were Maggie MacAulay, Lexy MacAulay, Donald MacAulay and Margaret MacAulay. Charles emigrated to New Zealand, possibly arriving in Australia on board the 'Medic' in 1914 and then travelling on to New Zealand where he lived at 91 Hobson Street in Wellington. During World War I Charles served with the Auckland Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion (Service No. WWI 17/223), his name recorded incorrectly as Charles McAulay. It is possible that his parents had died by this time as the name of his sister, Lexy MacAulay (b. 1883) is mentioned on his Military Personnel File. Charles was killed in action at Ypres on 7 June 1917. 32-year-old Charles was buried in the La Brique Military Cemetery No. 2 [I. V. 5]. Bio by Debbie McCauley (18 December 2024).
