About Pte. Edmonds Stewart Turi Karetai
Edmonds Stewart Turi Karetai was born in the Dunedin suburb of Ōtākou on 26 February 1894 (reg. 1894/6543). His parents were Hohepa Tunuku Karetai 'Joseph' (1857-1930) and Irihapeti Karetai (nee Edmonds) 'Elizabeth' (1868-1929). Edmonds joined the New Zealand (Māori) Pioneer Battalion during World War I. He was killed in action at Gallipoli on 21 August 1915. Edmonds is remembered on the Hill 60 New Zealand Memorial within the Hill 60 Cemetery in Turkey.
