About Pte. James Campbell

James Campbell was born at Hampden in the Otago region of New Zealand's South Island on 2 May 1897 (reg. 1897/7507). His parents were Malcolm Campbell and Grace Campbell (née Taylor) who had married in Dunedin on 12 May 1885. Malcolm worked as a baker, but suffered from consumption and had travelled to Christchurch for treatment. He was on his way home on board the Normanby and St. Andrews express train when he died on 3 November 1896. James was born six months after his death. Grace remarried in Dunedin in 1902 to Marius Henry Lyders. During World War I James served with the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion (Service No. WWI 7/2369) under the pseudonym 'Frederick Campbell'. He was killed in action at the Somme on 15 September 1916. James is remembered on Panel 3 of the Caterpillar Valley New Zealand Memorial. Bio by Debbie McCauley (20 November 2024).
