About Pte. Michael Budd

According to his Military Personnel File, Michael Budds was born at Youghal in County Cork, Ireland, on 4 October 1875, however the Ireland, Civil Registration Births Index gives a year of 1871 and his parents as Michael Budds and Elizabeth Budds (nee Kelleher) who had married at Midleton in County Cork, Ireland on 20 February 1867. Michael emigrated to the United States on board the Teutonic, arriving on 25 April 1894 and spending three years in the American Army and a further three years in the American Marines. He then emigrated to New Zealand where he worked as a farmer. During World War I, Michael served with the Auckland Infantry Regiment. He became unwell in France with chronic bronchitis and spent time at Brockenhurst in England before being invalided back to New Zealand. He was discharged as no longer physically fit for war service on 13 February 1919. Michael died at Narrow Neck Military Hospital in Auckland on 1 May 1920 and was buried in Waikumete Cemetery on 4 May 1920 [Prot. Soldiers Area C, Row 1, Grave 36.]. His medals were sent to his next of kin, his brother Daniel Budds of Downs in Washington, United States. On 2 August 1949 his brother John Budds (likely ID 163846328) wrote a letter from his home at 24 Beresford Street at Bayswater in Auckland, to the military inquiring after Michael's medals. Bio by Debbie McCauley (7 September 2024).
