About Pte. Thomas Norman Tattersall
Thomas Tattersall was born at Brookby, Auckland in New Zealand's North Island on 11 August 1891. His parents were Lawrence Tattersall and Martha Jane Tattersall (nee Kemp) who married in 1883. Thomas was a carpenter before he joined the Auckland Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion, 16th (Waikato) Company during World War I (Service No. WWI 48584). He was killed in action at the Somme on 26 March 1918 and is remembered on the Grevillers New Zealand Memorial (bio by Debbie McCauley, 16 January 2022).
A massed German attack on 21 March 1918 tore a hole in the British front in Somme. On 26 March two composite NZ brigades pushed forward until they clashed with the advancing enemy formations between Auchonvillers and Hamel. Thomas likely died during this particular battle.
