I found an interesting article the other day at the OU library (Western History Collections) that was written by Kah-Ne-You-Ah(AKA Cornelia Chandler). The article was titled "My Life in the Indian Nation". It was in a book titled "The History of Ottawa County." In this article, Ms. Chandler talks about how her grandma, Rebecca Naki-Ka-Tee-Hee Morris hid from the soldiers. She also relates about the "The Great Hold Out". Cornelia was 6 years old when they were forced to leave. She talks about the arrangements that Gideon Morris made with the government about transporting the family. She tells of how there were 70 family members who made the trip. They included family members from as far as Cleveland and Tennessee. They had boarded a train which took them to Memphis. From there they took a river boat down the Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers to Fort Smith, Arkansas. At Fort Smith, they met General STand Watie and proceeded to the Indian Nations. In the article, Ms. Chandler states that General Stand Watie was a half-brother to Rebecca Naki-Ka-Tee-Hee. She then talks about her early days in indian territory. Apparently Cornelia Chandler had taped this information and her daughter has placed a copy of the tape at the Ottawa County Historical Society, Oklahoma State Museum of History and at Northeastern A&M College in Miami, OK. I am going to try to listen to it, when I get the opportunity. RSRoof@aol.com.
