About Rereōmaki Rawinia Te Aewa
Te Tiriti o Waitangi treaty signatory, founding document for Aotearoa New Zealand (New Zealand Ministry of Culture & Heritage [NZCH], n.d.).
Rere-ō-maki
(He Awa Ora, n.d. [Image]).
"The mana of Rere-ō-maki is indicated by her participation in the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. On 23 May 1840, along with her brothers Te Ānaua and Te Māwae, she signified her assent by putting her moko on a copy of the treaty taken to Wanganui by Henry Williams. She was one of... [13] ...women whose names appear on the treaty" (Wilkie, 1990).
(NZCH [Image], n.d.]
"Her mother, Titia..., and her father, Te Aewa, a notable warrior" (Wilkie, 1990).
"She was the mother of military leader Te Keepa Te Rangihiwinui..." (Wikipedia, 2022).
Note: There exists a "Kahukareao" as "father" in the Polynesian Journal, but it conflicts with the other sources, so it's omitted here... Dr Pei Te Hurinui Jones has Te Aewa as the father in his tables, Te Ara Encyclopedia say's the father was Te Aewa, which reflects Rere-ō-maki's surname, and "...Ngāti Tūpoho..." also reflects the engraved whakapapa on Te Keepa's memorial, which Tūpoho is Hinegākau's brother, and still of Te Āti Haunui-a-Pāpārangi, as child to Tamakehu [I] and Ruaka (Jones, 1975; Wilkie, 1990).
