"In a meeting of Oct. 15,1768 the Vestry agreed "to give
Mr. Strites Twelve Pounds for his services in officiating
in the aforesaid churches." In the following year, Streit
served as a "licentiate" in New Jersey. In 1770, he was
ordained as pastor of a congregation at Easton, Pa. During
the Revolutionary war he held a chaplaincy in the third Virginia regiment. From 1778 to 1782 he labored in Charleston, S. C., then, till 1785, at New Hanover, Pa. From 1785
to the end of his life, 1812, he was pastor of a Lutheran congregation at Winchester, Va."

Rev. Christian Streit was licensed to preach by the Synod of Pennsylvania in 1769; served ten years in Easton, Pennsylvania; Chaplain of the 3rd Virginia Regiment during the War for Independence; pastor in Charleston, South Carolina 1778-1780; taken prisoner by the British and held until exchanged in 1782 ††; pastor at New Holland, Pennsylvania 1782-1785; pastor at Winchester, Virginia from 1785 to 1812.

icn_check.gif Some of the above †† needs to be verified. The Rev was in Charlestown township Chester County, PA for some time between 1779 and 1782. See Mühlenberg <journals> project. His wife died there in August 1782 and he was with her. Mühlenberg speaks of other happenings as well earlier than this involving Pastor Streit. The years overlap and all could not be correct in the time sequencing.

BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL: Christian Streit was born on June 7, 1749, in New Jersey. He graduated from the Academy and College in Philadelphia and took theological home study with Henry M. Muhlenberg and Provost Wrangel. He was ordained in 1770 and served with the 8th Virginia Regiment from 1776 to 1777. Diary is included in this publication, including the index.

There is also a report of his infirmity when his wife was "wasting" away in Pennsylvania ( journals HMM Luly 23, 1782 )

Christian was the first Lutheran pastor in Winchester, Va. His diary of his early ministry is available in the book, the History of the Lutheran Church in Winchester. He preached throughout the Shenandoah Valley both in German and English to the early settlers along the valley pike. He is buried in Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Winchester and a statue of him stands in front of the restored wall of his original Lutheran Church. His accomplishments are also noted in the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester.

The Rev. Henry Melchior Mühlenberg writes about his tenure in Pennsylvania (see project list of surnames) Rev. Streit appears at least three times from 1779-1782
