Dr. Thomas Mallory (Doctor of Divinity), Rector of Northendon, Cheshire and of Eccleston, Lancastershire, England (1605-1671)

When civil war broke out in England, Thomas who was rector at Northenden church, rode immediately to the home of Robert Tatton and joined a small band holding there against Cromwell's forces. They were not well armed and were soon overtaken. Thomas seems to have been taken prisoner at this time. All his property and income were sequestered. In 1660 he petitioned Parliament to regain his property and living. A month later, Charles II being restored to the throne reinstated Thomas and made him a canon of Chester. The following December he was created a doctor of divinity and was afterward identified as 'Thomas Mallory the Devine'. He died in 1671 in Lancashire where he was rector of Eccleston and Brindle. His will was proved in Chester in May of 1674. Sons Thomas and Roger are named as being in Virginia in his will. He was married twice, first to Jane and secondly to Frances. He entered college at Oxford on 15 Oct 1624 and received his BA on May 7 1628 and his MA on 17 Jan 1631/32. He was first appointed as Rector of Easington, Oxfordshire in 1632.

In a history about Cheshire, the following information applies to this Reverend Thomas Mallory. "Between his matriculation and his appointment to the living of Northenden, (Cheshire), Thomas Mallory junior was a curate, perhaps at Davenham (was Easington, Oxfordshire according to Virginia Heraldic). His younger brother, George, was curate under his father at Mobberley. By 1635 Thomas Mallory junior had acquired a wife, Jane, and children, one of whom, Franàces, was bequeathed 20 guineas, a very substantial sum, by Bishop Forster. But the curate installed at Northenden in 1616, a Mobberley man called Ralph Lowndes, still lived at the parsonage in Northenden. Thomas Mallory came to Northenden in 1640 after the death of Ralph Lowndes. By then his first wife had died and he had married Mary. So at the time of the siege Mallory was very much a newcomer to his parish.

His presence in the garrison was probably one of necessity, as well as conviction. He was ejected from the parsonage by the Parliamentarians in September 1643, at the same time as Tatton's step-father, Dr Nicholls, was ejected from the living of Cheadle.(15)

Mrs. Mary Mallory and her large family were allowed to remain in the parsonage, unmolested by the Parliamentarians, at least until the arrival of Henry Dunster in 1645, when she retired to the srnall cottage that was part of the glebe lands, all the time drawing a fifth of her husband's stipend and farming part of the glebe lands." (E) His 2nd wife is listed by the name of Frances in other sources, including the "Virginia Heredic".

On July 30 1660, he was made Canon of Chester. He was the Rector of Eccleston, in county Lancaster, England, a royalist minister according to the "Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography". He died 11 years later at Brindle near Eccleston, Lancashire. His will names sons Roger and Thomas in Virgina. (F-650)

In his will he mentions sons Roger and Thomas in Virginia. All of Thomas children apparently weren't in his will, as I've found two children listed clearly in VA, that aren't on the normal list for his children. Perhaps he had a son named Peter very early on before he was married at about age 18.

Mary R. Mallory in her late 19th century research attributed some of the birth dates and christenening dates of this Thomas' brothers to this Thomas's sons instead. She appears to be in error on where she placed them. 2 3 4

In Nom. Din Amen. I Thomas MALLORY, D.D. and rector of Eccleston In ye county of Lancaster being week of body but of perfect mind and memory make this my Last will end testament. Im'r'is I deliver up and comend my Spirit unto ye hands of my gretious Redeemer, Jesus Christ, leaving my body to be buried by my executrix hereafter named in ye Chancell of eccleston before named in the night as the Late Bishop of Chester was. As for that smell parcell of goods and chettells uhich the providence of the Almighty hath bestowed upon me I dispose of in manner end fore as followeth.

First: I give unto Frances, my dear wife, the sum of two hundred end fifty pounds to make up that sum of money which is in her nephew Dr. MILLINGTON's hand four hundred pounds. As also the bed end clothes which belong unto it whereon we have lain since our Intermarriage end all her wearing epperell, rings, jewels, end my Stone Horse.

ITEM: I give and bequeath to my son Thomas in Virginia, the sum of twenty shillings to buy himself ring; to my son Roger MALLORY in Virginia ye sum of five pounds.

To my son John MALLORY, Druggister in London, the sum of twenty shillings to buy him ring.

To my daughter Mary Forde, the Like sum;

To my daughter Jene Stamp, the sum of one hundred pounds to be paid unto her within six months after my decease or before in case she be married again with the consent of my executrix.

To my daughter Susanna the sum of twenty pounds and upon better deliberation thirty pounds more.

ITEM: I give and bequeath to ye poor of Eccleston the sum of five pounds; To ye poor of Northern the Like sum. To my servants Joe RAVEHSCROFT, James Charlton, wary Kenneyon, Anne Potter, if they continue in my service until my decease, to each the sum of twenty shiliings for their good and faithful service.

ITEM: My mind and will is that the forementioned four hundred pounds which is my bequest to my deer wife, Frances MALLORY, extend no further than to the use and occupation and at her decease to be divided among my children that shall be alive, viz. one hundred pounds to my son Thomas MALLORY in Virginia; end the rest to such of my children as she in her discretion shall think most diserve and went.

Note from Pam Wilson: I believe that Mary Mallory has been connected to the wrong Thomas Mallory as her father. According to John Bennett Boddie in Virginia Genealogies (p 117), she was the daughter of "Thomas Mallory of London," (not Rev. Thomas Mallory, Canon of Chester). I've disconnected her from the latter. Her birth year, then, is probably also incorrect since that was the birth year for Rev. Thomas' daughter Mary who married Edward Wirley.

However, she is listed in the will of Thomas MALLORY - Abstract from District Registry of the Probate Division of His Majesties Court of Justice at Chester DD. 8 Rector of Eccleston in ye Countie of Lancaster - dated July 10, 1661, proved November 21, 1671: “… To my daughter Mary Forde, the Like sum; …”
