According to the Barney Family Historical Association, http://www.barneyfamily.org/docs/main2.php: The first Barney to arrive in the new world was Jacob Barney Sr., who sailed from England in about 1630, and became a very prominent member of the Massachusetts Bay Colony at Salem. He was a Selectman on the Salem Town Council for many terms, and also a Deputy to the Massachusetts General Court during his public career which spanned several decades. He was one of the judges at the trial of Roger Williams, who later was the founder of the new colony of Rhode Island.

We believe that Jacob Barney was the son of Edward Barney of Bradenham, Buckinghamshire. According to https://www.geni.com/surnames/barney: The Barney name ( in my line ) Goes back to Braden, Buckinghamshire, England. Jacob Barney I ,born in 1601 or 1604 immigrated to Salem, Massachusetts in 1630 or 1634.from Braden, Buckinghamshire. He was a Tailor .He and his family sailed on the SHIP "THE Lyon one of the Winslow. Fleet.

According to Descendants of James Wesley Brundage of Pleasant Valley, NY, Compiled by Helen Brundage Fisher (1978), Jacob Barney, Jr. was born 5/2/1634. He was a Baptist minister and founded the churches in Charleston and Swansea, and was probably the one who founded the first Baptist Society in Boston in 1668. He moved from Salem not earlier than 1673, going to Bristol and Rehoboth.
