About Rfn. Edwin Ernest Patchett
Edwin Ernest Patchett (aka Edward) was born at Blenheim in the Marlborough region of New Zealand's North Island. His mother was Mary Ellen Patchett (nee Leeson) whose husband Joseph Patchett had died at Blenheim on 22 May 1892 at the age of 44 after fathering Edwin's seven older siblings. It is not known who Edwin's father is as his birth registration records NR in place of the fathers name, and he was born too far away from Joseph's death to be his son, even though Joseph is recorded as his father on his World War I records which also records Edwin's first name as 'Edward.' Edwin joined the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 4th Battalion during World War I (Service No. WWI 58800). He was killed in action at Colincamps, a commune in the Somme department in Hauts-de-France in northern France. He is remembered on the Grevillers New Zealand Memorial (bio by Debbie McCauley, 13 January 2022).
