While the ancestry of Richard DAVIS is sketchy, his Will provides substantial evidence for his children. Sophia DAVIS YANCY is quite clearly the daughter of Richard DAVIS.
The will of Richard DAVIS is published in "The History & Genealogies of Granville County, North Carolina 1746 - 1800" by Thomas McAdory Owen; 1993. Page 42.
SCB NOTE: I have attempted to type the author's transcription exactly as it appears in the book. All side notes included below are those of the original author :
"Davis, Richard, of Caroline Co. (Va.) Will, dat. June 16, 1761; prob. Nov. Ct. 1761. To wife (name not given), lends all his estate during her widowhood; (2) to dau. Patience Coyns negro girl "Isbel", and is said negro has a child it is given to gr. dau. Teriah Coyns, said negros "Judy" and "Isbel" are given "to my daughter Coyns Davis her life", and excepting the two children already given, "all their increase to be Divided at my Daughter Patience Coyns Death among the Children born of her own Body" (Coyns Davis and Patience Coyns are undoubtedly one and the same); (4) to dau. "my Daughter Teriah Terry my son Zachariah Davis & Mary Consolon (sic), the part belonging to Teriah to be placed in the hands of son Absolom to be paid by him to her, and no one else, and "if she never comes her own 'self' her part to be his; and the part belonging to Mary to be placed in hands of son Augustine to be paid by him to her and no one else, and "if she never Comes" to be his own, and (12) "my Will is that two of my sons or Sons in Law to value it" (the estate) and "my Will is that the County Court shall not be concerned with this my Will only to put it on Record." Exs. sons Absolom and Augustine. Wit: Wm. Upshaw, Thomas Upshaw, Wm. Holly, Id. p. 50. Inv. ret. to May Ct. 1762; among other items: "a passelle of Books," and 11 negros. Id. p. 74."
SCB NOTE: I invite anyone to help interpret this article. Is Mary Consolon Richard's daughter ? If so, she must be married, but not yet of age. Likewise, the portion for daughter Teriah Terry is also held by a brother.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tmark/RichardDavisWill.html: 8 March 1732/3: Robert Baber petitioning for administration of the estate of Joseph Andrews, certificate is granted him for obtaining letters of administration. It's ordered John Wyatt, James Terry, Henry Issbell and Richd. Davis appraise the estate of Joseph Andrews. 9-10 March 1758: Action of debt. John Turner agt. James Terry, Richd. Davis, Henry Jones and Absalom Davis. Richd. and Absalom Davis say that they cannot deny they owe £100 current money. This judgment is to be discharged on the defendants' paying £50 current money with interest from 23 Jan 1750. Later that same year, 1758, Richard’s son Zacharias and son-in-law William Tynes begin appearing on tax lists in Granville County, North Carolina. By 1760 (few tax records survive from 1759), Richard himself and most of his children seem to have relocated to North Carolina. Could this large debt judgment against him have been the proximate cause of Richard’s decision to leave Caroline County? It has been said that debt avoidance was one of the motivating factors during the entire westward expansion, and this may be a case in point.

The birth years for the children of Richard DAVIS seem to vary greatly among posted family trees. I am listing Sophia at ABT. 1730, because this places her in the correct age to be the mother of Austin. Further confirmation is required. Obviously, Austin may have been the son of a wife previous to Sophia.
Richard Davis of Caroline County, Virginia. He was present at the county's founding in 1727.
