While attending Fairmont, he met Lois Merrell Bell from Philippi, West Virginia, who was living there in the dorms. They married on Oct. 18, 1950 in Winchester, Virginia and moved to Denver Colorado while Richard was serving in the Air Force. Their only child, Joan Elizabeth Frum was born at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital, on April 13th, 1951 (Friday the 13th). Richard took his family back to Grafton, West Virginia to live with his parents and sister, Martha Jean Frum for about two years, while he finished his education and his military service. He was stationed in Texas part of that time, during the Korean war. He and "Merrell" divorced in 1955 and he moved to Ocala, Florida. (He did not see his daughter again until 1968 in California.)
Richard went on to a career of teaching and later became a stockbroker. He was an avid golfer who loved the sun, the water and the Florida lifestyle. He lived near the Gulf of Mexico in Sarasota and Bradenton. His daughter joined him there for summer vacations and they traveled together throughout the state of Florida, down to the Keys, over to Miami and Fort Lauderdale. He worked for Goodbody & Associates in Bradenton, Florida until the early 70's, when he suffered a heart attack and moved back to the family home in Webster community, near Grafton .He never remarried and never moved from that house again. After the death of his father in 1972, then his mother in 1975, he cared for his reclusive sister Martha until her death in 2002. She suffered from depression and anxieties that kept her from leaving the house for many years, so Richard devoted himself to her for over 25 years. He spent that time immersed in books (mostly detective novels), music, movies, and the stock market. He learned to play the guitar when he was almost 80. He had a punching bag in the garage, a treadmill and a stationary bike in the living room. He also loved to drink and smoke, in spite of recurring health problems and doctor's warnings. He was stubborn, witty, intellectual and content with his quiet life in the hills. He always referred to his home state as "West, by God Virginia!"* with a laugh! He would have loved to travel to California to visit his three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, but his heart condition prevented him from flying in the last ten years of his life. He filled the house with electronics and traded stocks online until the day he died in 2013. He said many times that he didn't want to die because he didn't want to miss anything! The cardiac arrest happened in an instant.
