Not the same as Richard (Not The Admiral's Son) Hawkins who married Grace Elizabeth Hawkins

RIchard Hawkins

Death: c. 1665 Devon, England

Burial:

  • St.. James Church and Churchyard
  • Slapton
  • South Hams District
  • Devon, England
  • Plot: Unknown

Family links:

Parents:
  • Richard Hawkins (1562 - 1622)
  • Judith Hele Hawkins (1568 - 1629)

He had ONE wife, Elizabeth (last name unknown, *possibly* Drake but no proof) and three children:

  • Elizabeth - NOT Elizabeth Pope of Virginia!
  • Nicholas - the extent of whose resettlement was from Slapton to Kingsbridge, a few miles away
  • Jeremiah

He DID NOT marry Grace Cutland, who was the wife of a DIFFERENT, PROBABLY UNRELATED Richard Hawkins.

notes

None of Sir Richard Hawkins' children settled in America - they remained closely tied to Devon. Claims to the contrary are trading on a similarity of name ("Hawkins" is actually very common) to create a Fictitious Pedigree.

Was Richard Hawkins, son of Sir Richard and Judith Hele, a bigamist?

There IS NO primary evidence that the Richard Hawkins who was the son of Sir Richard Hawkins and Judith Heale was the the same person as the Richard Hawkins who married a Grace Cutland in Shebbear, Devon, England.

There is NO Grace Cutland, NO marriage to a Grace and NO second family of this Richard Hawkins mentioned in "Plymouth Armada Heroes".

There are Shebbear, Devon christening records attached to this Grace from 1636 - 1643 for 4 children - NONE of these christening records match the christening records for the 3 children of Richard and Elizabeth Hawkins of Slapton, Devon - 1635 - 1642.

However, the births of the children credited to a Richard and a Grace overlap the births of the 3 children listed for Richard and Elizabeth.

Are these records records are evidence that this Richard was a bigamist - having a family in Slapton and another one in Shebbear?

OR - are these records evidence that there was more than one Richard Hawkins?

There were MANY Hawkins families in England during this time - even in the same area. And MANY sons named Richard or John or William Hawkins

But the SAME NAME does not mean the SAME FAMILY.

Are we to think that ALL men named Richard Hawkins in the Devon, England area are the SAME PERSON?

If one uses "Plymouth Armada Heroes" as a source, there is the listing of one marriage to Elizabeth and the birth of 3 children, Elizabeth, Nicholas and Jeremiah.

from p. 164 - "Plymouth Armada Heroes"

https://archive.org/details/plymoutharmadahe00hawk/page/164/mode/2up

"Richard, the second son of Admiral Sir Richard Hawkins, according to his father's will, inherited Pryvitt, in Alverstoke, Southampton ; but lived at Slapton.
He married Elizabeth by whom he had :
Elizabeth, baptized October 18th, 1635.
Nicholas „ March 31st, 1639.
Jeremiah „ June 12th, 1642.

All baptized at Slapton as the children of Richard Hawkins and Elizabeth his wife.

Elizabeth, the wife of Richard Hawkins, was buried at Slapton, January 27th, 1666.
Richard Hawkins was buried at Slapton, November 22nd, 1667."

There is NO mention at all in "Plymouth Armada Heroes" of a marriage to a Grace Cutland or a son named John Joseph Hawkins or any of the other children (Drake Julian Hawkins; Julian Hawkins; Joane Hawkins; and Richard Hawkins) named in the Find a Grave bio.

According to Find a Grave, a John Joseph Hawkins supposedly was born in 1634 but baptized in Warminster, Wiltshire, England on Mar 22, 1639. Warminster is more than 100 miles from Devon. Does not make sense in 1639 they would travel over 100 miles to baptize a child when the other children were baptized in Devon between 1635 and 1642.

Then there is the fact that children were not given middle names at this time.

I know there may be a marriage record that list a Richard Hawkins and a Grace Cutland and birth records that lists a Richard Hawkins and a Grace -

BUT does that mean that those Richard Hawkins' are the same the Richard Hawkins that is the son of Sir Richard and Judith Heale Hawkins?
