Robert Emmett (Sgt) Sheldon was born on June 1, 1845, in Tiffin, Ohio. He married Mary Elizabeth Butler on February 24, 1869, in Columbus, Ohio. They had six children in 17 years. He died on January 21, 1917, in Columbus, Ohio, at the age of 71, and was buried there.

He established the wholesale dry goods house of Miles, Bankroft, and Sheldon in 1885. Founded the Shelton Dry Goods Co. in 1900.
