He was one of the Battle of Britain pilots. He shot down 35 German planes, six probates and damaged 20. He was awarded the D.F.C. and the D.S.O. with a bar to each, which meant that he deserved them twice. Sailor Malan said thet the bravest thing he ever did was to corner Sir Winston Churchill one day at Biggin Hill Airfield and ask him to be Godfather to his new-born son. After the war he formed the Rand War Veterans Action Committee in South Africa. He considered the Separate Representation of the Voters Bill proposed by Dr Malan's Nationalist Government, which removed voting rights from the coloureds, totally unfair. He later formed the Torch Commando and two hundred thousand ex-servicemen joined it. He died in 1963.
