"If Sarah was a RANDOLPH, as tradition gives, she was the likely daughter of William Dungeness RANDOLPH and may ISHAM. Two of the RANDOLPH sons married daughters of Elizabeth PEYTON of Gloucester County. Mary (ISHAM) RANDOLPH had an older half-sister named "Sarah". Sarah PEYTON named a son "William." There is family lore that the PEYTON kinship to Thomas JEFFERSON came from this Sarah RANDOLF, who was either a sister or a niece of Jane RANDOLPH, the mother of Thomas JEFFERSON. If Sarah was the daughter of William Dungeness and Mary (ISHAM) RANDOLPH, she would have been the aunt of Jane (RANDOPH) JEFFERSON; that is, Jane RANDOLPH would have been a niece of Sarah RANDOLPH. Adding to the probability of kinship, many early genealogies of Colonel William RANDOLPH credit him with three daughters, but name only two, Mary and Elizabeth. Sarah RANDOLPH was probably the youngest child.

63 M i. William PEYTON was recorded in Amherst County, Virginia Deed Book E, page 193, when on 1 November 1779, John PEYTON, Senior and his wife Susannah, made a deed to William PEYTON, Senior. Lewis, Philip, Valentine and Will PAYTON were listed as 1782-1787 Virginia Taxpayers in Lincoln County.
64 M ii. Philip Peyton was born about 1720, and died 10 April 1795.
65 M iii. Robert PEYTON was born about 1725 and died 5 January 1795.
66 M iv. Henry PEYTON was born about 1729 and died before 1779."
