Biography
Sarah “Sallie” Emily Dillon was born on August 12, 1849, in St Louis, Missouri. She was close with her younger sister who passed away at a young age. She married John Dillon on August 26, 1868, in her hometown. They had two children during their marriage.
She was an active member of the International Order of GoodTemplers.
Her husband died in 1872 at which time she dedicate her life to teaching.
Sarah was much loved as school teacher which she did for 50 years, 32 one of which she spent as principal.
She was a courageous woman for her times not relenting to conformity of a woman as passive. When her young students were not provided for on a school trip by the St. Louis trolley company as was promised she took them to court. Remarkably challenging the powerful entity. She continued to appeal the judges decisions until she beat the railroad receiving the settlement, she felt deserving her students suffering. This drama was so striking to the times it was covered beginning to end by the St. Louis newspapers.
Her school was where the "troubled boys" were sent.
She is quoted as saying, "they have sent me lots of other boys from other schools", "boys they couldn't handle. Nine-tenths of them have got along right here, and have gone through with good standing."
She believed fiercely in her boys even taking on the mantle of the baseball team superviser were she took great quite pride in her young men.
She died on June 4, 1924. Some of those "troubled boys", now grown men attended her funeral with their families and children.
She was celebrated by the city of St. Louis with honors for her lifetime of selfless dedication during her life as well as after her death.
