The Identities of Richard's Wives
"Richard's first wife, Sarah, appears only fleetingly in several deed records, and her identity cannot be proven. She was born say 1690, and she had clearly married Richard by 1719 (her first appearance in the deeds)., and likely before 1713, about the time Arthur was born. She last appears, as has been shown, on 20 April 1742, when she co-signed a deed with her husband in Isle of Wight County.
Could she have been a daughter of Arthur Whitehead Sr.? The younger Arthur Whitehead's land adjoined Richard's in 1727 when Richard obtained a headright on the south side of Arthur's Swamp. The name Arthur was given to Richard's eldest son, suggesting a possible kinship. Arthur Whitehead Sr. had left a will in Isle of Wight County dated 11 January 1710/1, naming only his wife Mary and son William. If Sarah had been unmarried at that time, it would seem likely he would have named her, and he did not. However, other children were apparently left out of the will, including sons Arthur Jr., Lazarus, and Robert. Many years later, Arthur Jr.'s son Arthur was assigned the guardianship of Richard Vick Jr. on 11 September 1751. These associations are not in themselves strong enough evidence to prove Sarah's identity. No further records can be found to support Sara's possible Whitehead connection, and her maiden surname remains unknown." pp. 19 - 20.
