About Sen. Charles Edward McCorkle

Senator Charles Edward McCorkle was the son of William Henry McCorkle and Virginia H Wilson.

On the 1860 District 2, Rockbridge Co., Virginia census, I found farmer Wm H McCorkle, 37; other McCorkles: wife H Virginia, 27; CHAS E, 7; Walter, 6; Eli W, 5; Alice W, 10/12; Eliza, 52 Jane, 47 and Wm F, 26, all Virginia born. Ancestry indexes all but William McCorkle under surname "Virginia."

On the 1870 Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found farmer W H McCorkle, 51; Virginia McCorkle, 41 CHARLES E McCorkle, 18; Walter L McCorkle, 16; Emmet W McCorkle, 15; Alice McCorkle, 11; Howard McCorkle, 9 and Eliza McCorkle, 62, all Virginia born.

On the 1880 Natural Bridge, Rockbridge Co., VA census, I found farmer William H. McCorkle, 61; wife Virginia H. McCorkle, 53; sons or daughters: CHAS. E. McCorkle, 37; minister Emmet W. McCorkle, 24; Alice W. McCorkle, 20; Howard McCorkle, 19; Henry H. McCorkle, 8 and sister Eliza McCorkle, 73, all Virginia born.

Senator Chas. E McCorkle, of Rockbridge, is desperately ill at the Virginia Hospital in Richmond, and there are very grave doubts as to his recovery. He has been an invalid for twenty years, and was wheeled daily in his chair into the Senate. His nervous system apparently collapsed on Monday night and he has been very ill since. His brother, Dr. McCorkle, of Clifton Forge is with him. The 15 Dec 1899 issue of the Staunton Spectator and Vindicator.

Senator Chas. E McCorkle, of Rockbridge, who was elected to the State Senate in 1898 to succeed Judge S H Letcher, who resigned to go on the bench, died in Richmond on Thursday morning of last week in a hospital in that city. His remains were taken to Rockbridge and buried, accompanied by a delegation from the Senate and House. Quite a number of gentlemen are mentioned in connection with the vacancy. The 22 Dec 1899 issue of the Staunton Spectator and Vindicator.

His tall 4 sided shared monument is hard to read. He also has an older small marker (see photos).
