About Seung-won Han
Han Seung-won (Hangul 한승원; born 1939) is a South Korean writer. He primarily writes about people who struggle against their fate in Jangheung, a county situated off the southern coast of the Korean peninsula where Han himself was born. Han's work tends to have a strong sense of place; his stories are often set in his coastal hometown and contain the local dialect.[1] He is the father of 2024 Nobel laureate for literature, Han Kang.
He was born as the second son of eight children in Jangheung, Jeollanam-do . He learned the Myungsim Bogam [Mindfulness Meditation] from his grandfather when he was young.
In 1968, when his novel Mok - sun was selected for the Daehan Ilbo, he began his career as a novelist in earnest. In 1972 , he organized the literary society "Novel Literature" consisting of literary figures from Gwangju . Moon Soon-tae , Kim Shin-woon , Kang Soon-sik , Lee Gye-hong , and others were members of the literary society, and he took literature classes together at "Novel Literature". Starting with the Korean Novel Literature Award in 1980 for "Wall of Clouds", he went on to win many literary awards, including the Korean Literature Writers Award and the Republic of Korea Literature Award . He returned home in 1997 and currently resides in Jangheung.
