About Sgt. George William Clode
He was baptized on 4 April 1824 at St Cuthbert Church, Widworthy, son of Samuel CLODE and Martha WELSMAN. He enlisted in the Royal Artillery, Plymouth Division (Plymouth, Devon, England), Rank: Gunner. He was attested on the 3rd September 1850. He was discharged from the Service at Woolwich on the 13th April 1852, due to Lung Disease. He departed in 18 October 1856 Liverpool in the ship Viscount Sandon, and arrived at the Port of Auckland, New Zealand on 13 February 1857 - 118 day passage. He married the widow Elizabeth (Nicholls) HOCKING on 9 April 1859 at St Paul Church, Grafton, Auckland. He saw Service in the 1864 Maori Wars; Rank of Sergeant in the 2nd Waikato Regt. Military No. 628. He was awarded a medal in 1870. He died at Auckland Hospital, Grafton, and interred April 14. Cause of Death: (a) Hypertrophy (b) Facilitation of Heart (c) Congestion of Livers.
