Vincent Tapp was born about 1728 in Saint George's Parish, Spotsylvania County (present-day Culpeper County), Virginia, a son of William Tapp and Christiana Bourne.

He married Mary Jett about 1752. Father of eleven children.

Vincent Tapp, Sr. served as a Private in Captain Stephen Ashby's Company of the Twelfth Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel James Wood, having enlisted on 10 October 1776. He was transferred to Lieutenant Colonel John Neville's Company in mid 1778 and was discharged on 10 October 1778.
