From The Scots Peerage, page 202 < Archive.Org >
Sir David, who swore fealty to Edward i. as Lord Superior of Scotland, 1291,^ and was one of the nominees of Baliol in the competition for the throne, in June 1292.* He was one of the prisoners taken by Edward at the battle of Dunbar 27 April 1296, and was committed to prison in the Castle of St. Breval. On 30 July 1297 he was released and had his estates restored on condition of serving in the King's expedition to the Continent.' He accordingly accompanied Edward to Flanders, and died there 1297.^
He married Muriel, the youngest of three daughters and co-heiresses of John Byset, Lord of Lovat, in Inverness-shire.' Among the records of Scotland found by King Edward in Edinburgh Oastle, and delivered by him to Baliol in 1292, was a letter by William de Fenton, Andrew de Boscho, and David de Graham (husbands of the three heiresses of Lovat) acknowledging that they had received from William Wyscard, or Wishart, Archdeacon of St. Andrews, and Chancellor of the King, those charters which the late John Byset had deposited in the Abbey of Jedburgh.^ Chancellor Wishart became Bishop of Glasgow in 1268,^ so that the marriage of David de Graham and Muriel Byset must have taken place prior to that date. In consequence of this marriage the private interests of Sir David lay chiefly in the north of Scotland, and he appears to have been involved in disputes with his brother-in-law Sir William de Fenton and the Bishop of Moray as to the lands of Kiltarlity and fishings of the water of Farrar." He had also, however, from his father the lands of Merton and others in Berwickshire.^
He had a son and a daughter : —
1. Sir Patrick, who was under age at his father's death, as, on 17 March 1298, Edward i. grants to Robert de Felton, for good service in Flanders, the marriage of Patrick, son of David de Graham deceased.^ … He married a daughter of John of Argyll, …
2) a daughter, Christian name unknown, married (as his first wife) to William, Earl of Ross. Hugh, Earl of Ross, killed at Halidon Hill i;-{33, in a charter to Patrick de Graham of the lands of Scatraig in Strathnairn designs him ' avunculus meus.' ^

Sir David Graham of Dundaff was the son of Sir David de Graham of Dundaff. He married Annabelle of Strathearn, daughter of Robert, 4th Earl of Strathearn. He died circa 1270. He held the office of Sheriff of Berwickshire.1 He lived at Kincardine, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Between 1249 and 1286 he acquired a royal charter of all of his lands, and from the 5th Earl of Strathearn the lands of Kincardine, Perthshire.
Mr. Hugh Ross the Author of the Genealogy of the family of Kilravock conjectures that Sir David Grahame had a Son Patrick and which is Indeed Certain but it would appear this Author thinks that Mary Bisset his wife married the Fraser for her second husband and that her son Sir Patrick Grahame dying, the children of her second husband the Frasers succeeded to the estate of the house of Lovat. But it is much more likely that Sir David's daughter or his grandchild Sir Patrick's daughter married Sir Simon Fraser of Kinell who was a branch of the family of Fraser, tho by the most exact rules of cronologie she has been Sir David's daughter and sister to Sir Patrick since the heir of the marriage. "Sir David Graham married into the ancient Celtic Earldom of Strathern and acquired land around Kincardine in south Perthshire."
Sir David de Graham, who appears to have held the office of sheriff of the county of Berwick, acquired from Malise, Earl of Strathearn, ther lands of Kincardine, in Perthshire, which became one of the chief designations of the family. He died about 1270. By his wife, Annabella, daughter of Robert, Earl of Strathearn, he had three sons, namely, Sir Patrick, who succeedee him; the celebrated Sir John the Graham, the companion of Wallace; and Sir David, one of the nominees, his eldest brother being another, of Baliol, in his competition for the crown of Scotland, 1292.[http://www.electricscotland.com/webclans/dtog/graham2.html]
3 - Burkes Peerage 1934 (Montrose) and The Scots Peerage (Montrose) disagree here as Burkes inserts this Sir David of Dundaff and shows that David as husband of Annabella of Strathearn whom The Scots Peerage shows as wife of SIr Patrick of Kincardine. There is therefore some difference in allocation of children, the most 'important' one possibly being the John who became Earl of Menteith.
Various sources indicate that his wife was Annabella, daughter of 4th Earl of Strathearn. The Scots Peerage (Strathearn) specifically contradicts this and reports "the evidence is clear that she was the wife of his son Sir Patrick". [Stirnet Graham01]
David was also Sheriff of Berwickshire. He witnessed a grant in 1260. He obtained a charter for all of his lands from King Alexander III, and acquired the lands of Kincardine in Perthshire from his brother-in-law Malise, 5th Earl of Strathearn. BP1934 (Montrose) and TSP (Montrose) disagree here as BP1934 inserts an additional generation of a Sir David of Dundaff (which we follow) and shows that David as husband of Annabella of Strathearn whom TSP shows as wife of SIr Patrick of Kincardine. There is therefore some difference in allocation of children, the most 'important' one possibly being the John who became Earl of Menteith.

b) [DAVID [IV] de Graham (-[Jul 1297/17 Mar 1298]). The primary source which confirms his parentage has not yet been identified. However, the documents quoted in this section which name both David [IV] and David [V] de Graham (who are clearly two distinct individuals) can best be explained if David [IV] was the son of David [III]. [Balfour Paul records that "Malise Earl of Strathearn" [David’s maternal uncle] granted “the lands of Kincardine and others” to “David de Graham” by charter dated to [1260/71] but does not provide the source reference[762]. It is not certain whether this grant refers to David [V] or his supposed paternal uncle David [IV]. However, a grant of land by Earl Malise is best explained by a close family relationship, which would only be the case if the grantee was David [V].] David de Graham and his nephew David de Graham were taken prisoner in 1297 at the battle of Dunbar in which his brother Patrick was killed[763]. An undated charter, dated to before 5 Dec 1298, records a dispute between Archibald Bishop of Moray and "dominum Willelmum de Fentwine militem et dominum David de Graham militem ac eiusdem David heredem Patricium" about "ecclesie de Kyntalargyn…et…piscaria de Esse fluminis de Thorn" to the hospital of Spey[764]. m ([1267/68]%29 MURIEL Bisset, daughter of JOHN Bisset & his wife --- ([1255/59]-). The Inquisition of a jury in Ireland dated 10 Aug 1278 names "William de Fenton and Cecilia his wife, Andrew de Bosco and Elizabeth his wife, and David de Graham and Muriel his wife…his daughters and of age" as "nearest heirs" of "John Byset son and heir of the late John Byset…[who] died 19 years ago"[765]. Her marriage can be dated to before 1268: Balfour Paul cites a document dated 1292, which records that the husbands of Muriel and her two sisters had received from "William Wyscard or Wishart Archdeacon of St Andrews and Chancellor of the King" charters deposited by their late father, and notes that Chancellor Wishart became bishop of Glasgow in 1268[766]. A charter dated 27 Oct 1278 records that "Mulrella the youngest daughter [of John Biset junior deceased]" appointed "David de Graham her husband" to receive her share of her father’s lands[767].
David [IV] & his wife had [two] children:
i) PATRICK [III] de Graham ([after 1280]-after 19 Jul 1333). … m [--- of Argyll, daughter of JOHN of Argyll & his wife ---. Balfour Paul says that Patrick [III] “married a daughter of John of Argyll, it would appear without the consent of Robert de Felton to whom...his marriage had been granted by King Edward I”. He adds that “there is no record of his issue, but from the fact that Hugh Fraser Lord of Lovat in 1367 did homage to the Bishop of Moray for Kiltarlity and the fishings of Farrar, it has been supposed that he left a daughter through whom his share of Lovat was carried to the Frasers”. He also says that “it appears from an instrument of resignation of William the Graham, son and heir of Henry the Graham, in favour of Thomas Earl of Moray his overlord dated at Chanonry 2 Aug 1420, that the lands of Kerdale belonged to a family of Graham to the early part of the 15th century...”[775].]
ii) [--- de Graham . m ---. One child:
- (a) MARGARET de Graham (-after 1341).
