Death

A date and place of death has not been identified for Sir John Wallace of Craigie, here treated. It would appear that he was still alive on 23 August 1597, when his eldest son John is identified as John Wallace, younger of Craigie, but he and his eldest son John must have died before 14 June 1616, when Sir Hugh Wallace of Craigie was charged to enter as heir to his deceased grandfather. The Second or Additional Testament Dative and Inventory of his Mother

Dame Margaret Cunningham died intestate in June 1573. On 31 May 1576 the additional testament dative and inventory of the deceased Dame Margaret Cunningham, sometime spouse of Andrew Stewart, Lord Ochiltree: "was faithfullie maid & givin up be Johne Wallace now of Craigie in name and behalf of Wm Robert Michael Alan [ Martha ] & Sara Wallaces hir lauchfull bairnis." Confirmation was granted to the executors dative on 5 June 1576. Margaret Campbell died intestate on 5 May 1597. 15 July 1587: Extract decreet arbitral by Mr. Henry Balfour and Mr. Alexander King, advocates, on the submission between John Wallace of Craigie and Robert Grahame of Knokdoliane, to decide questions arising from a contract between umquhile John Wallace of Cragie, father of the said John, and the said Robert Grahame, of excambion of the lands of Dod and of Knokdoliane dated 20 May 1570; decerning Wallace to raise an action of improbation of a tack to Richard Rynd, son of umquhile Patrick Rynd, of the lands of Eister Dod and Muir Latherwood; superceding the claim of Robert Grahame against John Maxwell, son of John Maxwell elder in Thornelie, in respect of the lands of Thornelie; decerning each to free the other of all actions for the duties of the lands of Mullarquhat, Thankschankston and Burnebank; decerning Robert Grahame to pay to Wallace the bygone profits of the lands of Drummeir; decerning Grahame to resign an annualrent on the lands called Cleriegalkis Clois in the burgh of Ayr in favour of Wallace. 23 August 1597: Charter by John Earl of Cassillis to Sir Thomas Kennedy of Culean Knight, his uncle, by which in implement of a Contract entered into between the Earl on the one part, and the said Sir Thomas Kennedy for himself and taking burden upon him for Dame Elizabeth Makgill his wife and Thomas Kennedy their eldest son, on the other part, dated 18th July then last, the Earl dispones to the said Sir Thomas Kennedy and Dame Elizabeth Makgill his wife in conjunct fee and liferent and the heirs male procreate between them, whom failling the said Sir Thomas Kennedy his heirs male whatsoever, of the barony of Culean comprehending the 20 pound land of Culean with the manor place and mill of Culean, 4 pound land of Glenalloway and Auchaltan and 5 merk land of Riddelston all formerly united into a free barony called the barony of Culean, and also the 40 shilling land of Coif with manor place yard and orchard of the same lying in the parish of Kirkoswald and Earldom of Carrick, and uniting the said barony of Culean, 4 pound land of Glenalloway and Auchaltan, 5 merk land of Riddelston and 40 shilling land of Coif into a free tenandry to be called the tenandry of Coif and ordaining the manor place of Coif to be the principal messuage of the said tenandry - To be holden feu of the Earl and his successors Earls of Cassillis, for payment yearly of the sums following viz. for the barony of Culean manor place and mill thereof the sum of £80 money of Scotland, for the 4 merk land of Glenalloway and Auchaltan the sum of £16 like money - for the 5 merk land of Riddleston the sum of 20 merks, and for the 40 shilling land of Coif the sum of £8 money aforesaid, extending in integro to the sum of £120 money aforesaid with 4 merks like money yearly in augmentation of the rental, at two terms in the year Pentecost and St Martin by equal portions, together with a duplication of the said sums of £120 and 4 merks at the entry of heirs.
