  • William Brereton (c. 1487 – 17 May 1536),[1] the son of a Cheshire landowner, was a Groom of the Privy Chamber to Henry VIII.[1] In May 1536, Brereton, the queen's brother, George Boleyn, Viscount Rochford, Henry Norris, Sir Francis Weston and a musician, Mark Smeaton, were tried and executed for treason and adultery with Anne Boleyn, the king's second wife.[2] Many historians are now of the opinion that Anne Boleyn, Brereton and their co-accused were innocent.[2]
  • William Brereton, born between 1487 and 1490,[1] was the seventh[3][4] son of Sir Randle Brereton of Ipstones, Shocklach, and Malpas,[3] Knight Chamberlain of Chester, knight banneret and knight of the body of Henry VII.[1] His mother was Eleanor, daughter of Piers Dutton of Halton, Cheshire.[1] Along with three of his brothers, William entered royal service. By 1521 he was a groom of the king's chamber, and from 1524, groom of the privy chamber.[1]
  • In 1529, Brereton married Elizabeth, daughter of Charles Somerset, 1st Earl of Worcester, widow of Sir John Savage, and second cousin to Henry VIII.[1] He and Elizabeth had two sons:[3]
    • Henry Brereton
    • Thomas Brereton
  • Elizabeth’s first husband was the grandson of Sir John Savage, who had been a Lancastrian commander at the battle of Bosworth in 1485. When the grandson had fallen into debt, and was also being held in the Tower for murder, all his lands were forfeited to the crown, and Brereton, as the king’s man in Cheshire, was granted jurisdiction over them. After Sir John Savage's death, Brereton’s marriage to his widow established a family relationship with the king and thus cemented his position as a royal servant.[5]
  • In reward for his work for the king, Brereton received a number of royal grants in Cheshire and the Welsh Marches. These eventually brought him more than £10,000 a year. However, he wielded power ruthlessly, on one occasion, engineering the judicial murder of John ap Gryffith Eyton, whom he blamed for instigating the killing of one of his own retainers.[6]
  • In May 1536, Anne Boleyn was accused of adultery with Mark Smeaton, a musician of the royal household, and the courtiers Henry Norris, Sir Francis Weston, William Brereton as well as her brother, George Boleyn, Viscount Rochford, all of the privy chamber.[7] The king's chief minister, Thomas Cromwell, "authorised and commissioned by the king,"[8] masterminded the proceedings against the queen and her co-accused.[9] The allegation against Brereton, who had been arrested on 4 May,[10] was that Anne solicited him on 16 November 1533, and misconduct took place on 27 November.[11] Historian Eric Ives argues that Cromwell added Brereton to the plot against Anne in order to end the troubles he was causing in the Welsh Marches, and to reorganise (and centralise) the local government of this area.[6]
  • The trials of William Brereton, Henry Norris, Sir Francis Weston, and Mark Smeaton took place at Westminster Hall on 12 May.[12] They were charged with high treason against the king, adultery with the queen and plotting king's death.[12] Having been found guilty, they were all sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered.[13] The queen and her brother were tried separately on 15 May within the Tower.[14]
  • On 17 May, William Brereton, George Boleyn, Viscount Rochford, Henry Norris, Sir Francis Weston and Mark Smeaton, were led from the Tower to a scaffold on Tower Hill.[15] George Constantyne, an eyewitness to their executions, recorded their last words.[16] Brereton's words as he faced the executioner's axe, "The cause whereof I die, judge not. But if you judge, judge the best,"[16] may be interpreted as a cautious declaration of his innocence which would avoid the forfeiture of his estates. An indication of his wife's continued trust in her husband is provided by her bequest to her son nine years later: "one bracelet of gold, the which was the last token his father sent me."[11][17]
  • William Brereton was portrayed by James Gilbert on the Showtime series, The Tudors, during season 2. The show made it seem he had been commissioned by the Pope (Peter O'Toole) to assassinate Anne Boleyn (Natalie Dormer) for the good of King Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and the Catholic Church. He was accused of having had carnal knowledge of the queen. Unlike the others in his position, who either denied -- George Boleyn (Pádraic Delaney) and Henry Norris (Stephen Hogan) -- or were tortured into admitting it -- Mark Smeaton (David Alpay) -- Brereton falsely admitted his guilt to Thomas Cromwell (James Frain).
  • On The Tudors, although Brereton was an actual historical figure, his character was totally fictionalised. William Brereton is portrayed as a young man, while in reality he was almost fifty. Moreover, he was not a Jesuit, nor was he commissioned by the Pope to assassinate Anne Boleyn. Anne was crowned queen in 1533 and executed in 1536,[18] the Pope did not formally establish the Jesuit order until 1540. Brereton was probably collateral damage when Thomas Cromwell moved against the Boleyn Faction and decided to get rid of him in the same coup.[6]

  • Sir Randle IV., of Malpas. also, built the Brereton chapel, or chantry, at the south side of Malpas church, in 1522. He and his wife Eleanor were buried in this chapel, and their tomb still exists. The Shocklach manor lies west of Malpas. It was purchased by Sir Randle Brereton V., of Malpas, in 1572, from Sir Richard Corbet. Malpas and Shocklach, at the time of the conquest, formed portions of the Barony of Malpas, of which Robert Fitz-Hugh was baron. He received it from Hugh Lupus, first Earl Royal of Chester. .... etc.

    • KNIGHTS AS LORDS OF LAND,
  • In the feudal times in order to become a knight it was pre-requisite to be an owner of lands ; hence, the evidence we have of our original ancestor being the original Lord of Brereton. In those days there were two degrees of knighthood, one a Knight Bachelor, or lord of a manor; the other a Knight Banneret, a knight who had distinguished himself in battle before his king or his baron ; as such was Sir Randle Brereton IV., of Malpas. He was so knighted for brilliant bravery at Terouenne, and at Tourney, in France, by Henry VIII. The knight bachelor always carried a penon or pointed flag ; the knight banneret had his penon cut off square by the king.

    • THE HALTON BRANCH OF THE MALPAS FAMILY,
  • There is very little recorded of this branch of the family. The Herald's Visitation Record of 1663-4 gives the pedigree commencing with Sir Roger Brereton, of Halton, the founder of the family, about 1540, and shows four generations of descent. I think this Sir Roger was the sixth son of Sir Randle Brereton IV., of Malpas, and the younger brother of John Brereton, the founder of the Norfolk branch. His mother was Eleanor, daughter of Sir Piers Dutton, the Lord of Halton and Dutton, in 1500. Sir Piers was descended from Odard, one of the companions in arms of the Conqueror. He (Odard) assumed the name of Dutton upon receiving a grant of that town from Hugh Lupus, first Earl Royal of Chester, the ancestor of Lady Ada's mother. Sir Piers was the great grandson of Sir Thomas Dutton, of Dutton, who was the Governor and Receiver of the Castle of Halton in 1330. Sir Piers was the son of Sir Lawrence Dutton, who married Johanna, daughter of Sir Andrew Brereton, of Brereton, and from whom are descended the present family of Baron Sherbourne, of Sherbourne, Gloucestershire. The Warburton family, of Arley, were also descended from the same Odard. Sir Roger Brereton married Katherine, widow of Edward Fulleshurst and daughter of Sir William Brereton IX., of Brereton, by his second wife, Eleanor, daughter of Sir Randle Brereton III., of Ipstone and Malpas, and the widow of Philip Egerton, of Egerton.

  • Sir Randle de Brereton II., of Ipstone and Malpas, married Joanna, daughter of William Holford. By her he had two sons : 1, Randle Brereton, founder of the Eccleston and Wettenhall branch : 2, Owen Brereton, of Bar Hill, the ancestor of Brereton of Coddington. His second wife was Katherine, daughter of William Butheley, of Eaton, Cheshire. By her he had three sons: 1, Randle, his heir, of Ipstone and Malpas; 2, Ralph Brereton, of Iscoyd Castle, Shropshire, who had one daughter, wife of John Holford ; 3, Bartholomew Brereton, of Grafton, who had three sons : a, Bartholomew ; b, John ; c, Humphrey, of Malpas, the historian of the War of the Roses.
  • Randle Brereton III., of Ipstone, died in Burgundy, France. His wife was Emma, daughter and heiress of John Carington, of Carington. By her he had two sons and two daughters : 1, Randle, his heir; 2, Humphrey, of Malpas; 3, Ellen, wife of Nicholas Bruyn, of Tarwin, Cheshire ; 4, Eleanor, wife of Philip de Egerton, afterwards wife of Sir William de Brerton IX., of Brereton.
  • Sir Randle Brereton IV., of Ipstone and Malpas ; Chamberlain of Chester 1506 to 1532; Knight of the Body to Henry VII. and Henry VIII. ; made a Knight Banneret by Henry VIII., at Boulonge, for Terrouenne and Tournay ; built the Brereton Chapel in Malpas Church in 1522, in which he was buried in 1532. He married Eleanor, daughter of Sir Piers Dutton, of Halton Castle, Cheshire. By her he had nine sons and three daughters: 1, Randle, his heir; 2, Richard, founder of the Tatton branch ; 3, John, founder of the Norfolk branch ; 4, Thomas ; 5, Peter ; 6, Roger, founder of the Halton branch ; 7, William, succeeded his father as Chamberlain of Chester ; was beheaded by Henry VIII. with Queen Anne Boleyn, in 1536; 8, Robert; 9, Urian, founder of the Handford branch. The daughters were : 1, Anne, wife of John Harcourt ; afterwards was wife of John Pershall, of Hordesley ; 2, Elizabeth, wife of Richard Cholmondeley ; afterwards was wife of Randle Mainwaring, of Over Peevor, Cheshire; 3, Jane, wife of Sir Thomas Hanmer, of Hanmer, Flintshire. (See Burosham branch).

  • Sir Randle Brereton V., of Ipstone, Malpas and Shocklach, married Eleanor, daughter of Sir Philip Egerton, of Egerton. By her he had one child, Anne, wife of Randall Dod, of Edge. His second wife was Izabel, daughter of Thomas Butler, of Bewsey. By her he had one son, Randle, his heir, and one daughter, Elizabeth, wife of James Starkey, of Darley. _________________
  • St. Oswald's Church in Malpas includes handsomely carved tomb and inscription of Sir Randal Brereton IV (d. 1530). This and the tenor bell Sir Randal donated to the church in 1508 are all that remain of his considerable estate and charity. He not only gave much to the church, but also established both a school and a hospital in Malpas. These are now gone, as is the Brereton Malpas mansion which succumbed to fire about two hundred years ago. This Sir Randal's son, Sir William Brereton, had first the good fortune to be Groom of the Privy Chamber to Henry VIII, and later the misfortune to have his consequent access to Queen Anne Boleyn used as a pretext for accusations of adultery. The charges cost both their lives, and no doubt had something to do with the Malpas and related Handforth Hall branches of the family siding with the Roundheads in the English Civil War. ____________________

  • About 1194, William de Brereton, son of this last Ralph, received a deed at the time of his marriage to Margery, daughter of Randle de Torhaunt, eight witnesses signing the contract. This William was knighted by Henry III in 1208, the beginning of honors held in the Brereton family for over five hundred years.
  • In 1216, Sir Ralph de Brereton, son of William, granted land to "Brereton" church, as shown by parish records still in existence.
  • About 1232, this Sir Ralph received payment of "half a salt works" for some public services done in Cheshire.

  • Sir William Brereton, Kt., son and heir of Ralph, married a daughter of Sir Richard de Sandbach, in fulfillment of a contract made with William de Venables.
  • About 1275, Sir William Brereton married Roesia, daughter of Ralph de Vernon. This wedding united the Breretons with the Vernons of "Haddon Hall," so well described by Majors in the novel "Dorothy Vernon." This Sir William later gave one hundred marks for the marriage of their daughter Margery to Thomas de Davenport in 1301. He was knighted by Edward III in 1321.
  • In 1342, Sir William and his wife, Roesia, united in a deed of lands in Brereton parish. Roesia must have believed in "woman's rights" and had her name put in the deeds. This Sir William received indulgences from the Pope for services rendered in

  • In 1354, Sir William Brereton, heir to his grandfather, married Ellena, daughter of David de Egerton, a descendant of the Norman barons; by this alliance the Brereton estates were greatly extended, placing their social standing among the best in England.
  • In 1386, Sir William Brereton, son of the above, married Anylla, daughter of Sir William Venables, a descendant of Gilbert de Venables, first baron of Cheshire, and grantee of the first Brereton estate, three hundred years before. By a second marriage, to Elena, daughter of Sir William Massey of Tatton Hall, in 1426, the Brereton holdings were among the great estates of England, including the manors of Malpas and Picton, with lands in Woodhull, Crouton, Charlton, and Norwich.

  • In 1409, a record says that King Henry removed the Mayor of Chester and placed Sir William Brereton in charge as military governor.
  • William Brereton, on the death of his grandfather, in 1435, was found heir to the vast estates of Brereton, and also the estates of his step-mother, in Tilston and Herthull, as recorded in 1438. He was knighted in 1485. His son, William Brereton, died issueless, breaking the line of descent, the succession passing to his nephew, son of Sir Andrew Brereton, in 1507.
  • On December 7, 1496, a deed was recorded to Ralph Brereton, brother of Sir Randle Brereton of Malpas. This Sir Randle was Chamberlain and Knight of the Bedchamber to Henry VII and Henry VIII. His son, John Brereton, about 1534, started the Norfolk branch of Breretons, from which many noted families have sprung.

  • As a side-light on court life of the period, there is a record of one Sir William Brereton of Malpas, whom Henry VIII suspected of being too familiar with the Queen, Anne Boleyn. He was confined in the tower of London, and later the King gave orders to "muzzle the bear," meaning to take his head off; so Sir William died May 17,1536, and two days later the Queen, mother of Queen Elizabeth, was beheaded. There is a legend that ever since that event the bear on the Brereton arms has been muzzled, but in free America we have left the bear free also. ______________________________

  • In the 4th year of Elizabeth's reign, William Manley, esq. and Thomas his son, passed over their right in the share of this manor, by fine, to John Brereton, esq. of Eccleston, the second son of Randle Brereton of Eccleston, a bastard son of Sir Randle Brereton of Malpas. also information about Malpas The Cholmondeley Chapel at the East end of the North aisle was built by Richard Cholmondeley and his wife Elizabeth in 1514. The Cholmondeley monument, shown in the photograph, was erected in 1605. It shows Sir Hugh Cholmondeley, who died in 1596, and his second wife Mary. The east side of the tomb shows Sir Hugh's son, Sir Hugh the younger and his wife Mary Holford. Sir Hugh the younger was knighted at the time of the Spanish Armada (1588) and was Sheriff of Chester in 1589. The inscription in Latin is translated as follows:

Hugh Cholmondeley of Cholmondeley the elder, Knight, Vice-Warden of the Welsh Marches, six times Sheriff died in his 83rd year, 1596, and in this earth is buried. Also his son and heir, Hugh Cholmondeley, Knight attaining the age of 50 departed this life AD 1601 and lies here. Also his wife the Lady Mary who after the death of her husband, on account of her very dear affection for him, for love of him had this monument erected AD 1605.

The Brereton Chapel is at the East end of the South aisle. Sir Randal Brereton specified in his will of 1530 that he should be buried in the Lady Chapel so it is presumed that this was on the South side. The Brereton effigy was ordered in Sir Randal's lifetime. As alabaster is not native to Cheshire it is likely to have been made from stone quarried near Burton on Trent. The spurs on the effigy indicate that he was a knight and the dog in the folds of his wife's skirt indicate fidelity. He fought in the battles of Terouanne and Tournay in France and was knight banneret to the body of King Henry VII. His son, was the Sir William Brereton executed by Henry VIII in 1536 on suspicion of being a lover of Anne Boleyn.

In addition there is brass in the East wall of the Brereton chapel, possibly as early as 1362, which states in Norman French "Sir Philip de Egerton, his wives and children lie here, may God have mercy on their souls". An alabaster stone shows a priest and the inscription in Latin "Here lies the body of Urian Davenport, at one time Vicar of Malpas and Vicar of Acton, which said vicar died 28 July AD 1495 on whose soul may the Lord have mercy, Amen."

Richard Cholmondeley the younger, was a benefactor in 1488 and it is known that Sir Randal Brereton gave the tenor bell in 1508. Among the other significant local families were the Dod family of Edge Hall, and the Tarletons of Bolesworth, whose hatchments hang with those of the Cholmondeleys of Cholmondeley Castle in the nave below the clerestory.

Other interesting features of the church are the remains of a triple sedilla, seating for additional priests, in the wall near the altar, and a piscina, for washing communion vessels. Most of the box pews of 1680 were destroyed during a restoration in the 1880s but six were preserved in the Brereton Chapel and later moved to the back of the South aisle. There is a fine example of an iron bound parish chest dating from the 13th century. Against the south wall are three 15th century stalls with misericords. There is a two storey porch on the south door. Malpas has some good examples of gargoyles. The guilding on the ceiling was renewed in the 1970s.

Bishop Heber, who wrote some well-known hymns including From Greenland's icy mountains; Holy, Holy, Holy and Brightest and best are the sons of the morning, had a connection with Malpas. He was born in 1775 at the Higher Rectory when his father was rector of the Higher Moiety of the parish. He became Bishop of Calcutta. Scenes from his life are shown in the lower part of the East window.

In the course of my own family history research I examined the records of Marton in Craven in West Yorkshire and found many referencers to the Heber family. For example, Mrs. Mary Heber, wife of the Revd. Reginald Heber B.D. rector of Malpas in Cheshire was buried at Marton in Craven on 10 February 1774. John Heber, clerk and A.M., rector of the Parish of Marton and vicar of Ribchester was buried at Marton in Craven on 3 July 1775. There are also many references to the family in the baptism register. Several of the Hebers were clerics. Bishop Heber's was connected with the Nowell family of Read near Whalley in Lancashire.

At Malpas there is the remains of a motte and bailey castle north of the parish church but there is no evidence for the bailey. Robert FitzHugh, the son of Hugh Lupus is believed to be responsible for the construction, some time before 1100. In the Domesday survey Malpas, then known as Depenbech, was said to have five knights. Malpas had been the centre of an Anglo-Saxon estate and parish and was an important town on the Roman road from Chester to the south. The motte is best seen from behind the church by the bowling green. This is very disappointing when one considers the former excellent state of the site as shown in a photograph in The Castles of Cheshire by P. W. Cullen and R. Hordern, Crossbow Books, 1986.

The Jubilee hall was built for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887. It is on land donated by the Marquis of Cholmondeley and built by public subscription which raised £12,000. It is used as a village hall

Note from Peter Cox:
Round the edge of the tomb is the following inscription in Latin -

"Here lie Randal Brereton Knight Banneret and Chamberlain of the County of Chester and the Lady Eleanor his wife, which said Randal and Eleanor, while yet living, had this tomb made, to wit at the feast of St Michael the Archangel AD 1522 on whose souls may God have mercy, Amen."
