About Sir Richard le Fowler, II, Crusader Knight
Sir Richard Fowler went on the Third Crusade to the Holy Land with Richard the Lion Heart in 1189.
Sir Richard served as commanding officer of bowmen who were tenants of his manor and maintained them at his own expense. Personally, he saved the camp from a nocturnal surprise attack. For his outstanding vigilance in deterring the attack, he received the honor of knighthood in the field from his royal commander, Richard the Lion Heart Plantaganet, Richard caused Fowler’s crest to be changed to a vigilant owl.
