wikipedia: Sir Robert Corbet (c.1477-1513) of Moreton Corbet Castle in Shropshire. The Corbet family were landed gentry of Anglo-Norman descent who had lived in Shropshire, part of the Welsh Marches for centuries. Many Corbets had already represented Shropshire in the Parliament of England.

Elizabeth Vernon (died 29 March 1563), daughter of Sir Henry Vernon of Haddon Hall and Tong and Anne Talbot, daughter of John Talbot, Second Earl of Shrewsbury.

Elizabeth had close connections to families powerful in the region and nationally. Her father had been treasurer to Arthur Tudor, the Prince of Wales. The Talbots had vast estates in western and northern England. Richard had two brothers: Roger Corbet (c.1501-1538), the heir to Sir Robert's estates, and Richard Corbet (died 1566). Both were to be MPs. However, of the three brothers, only Roger was provided for when Sir Robert died on 11 April 1513: aged about 12, he was to undergo a long wardship before coming into full possession of the Corbet estates in 1522.[2] Although he made generous provision for his four daughters, Sir Robert never even mentions Richard and Reginald,[3] The will dates from 1509, making it likely that the two younger sons were born after that date, so Reginald was probably little more than an infant when his father died. Both younger sons would have to look elsewhere for advancement. For Richard this meant, initially the court,[4] while for Reginald it was the law.

Legal career[edit] Reginald was educated at the Middle Temple and called to the bar,[1] although the dates of his early career are not known. He was to be Lent Reader in 1552, by which time he was a distinguished lawyer. He was auditor at the Middle Temple in 1556, assistant to the reader in 1559.

It is likely that Corbett was still at his Inn of Court when he served as MP for Wenlock in 1542. Only from about 1543 are the main outlines of his progress clear.

In 1543 Corbet served as Feodary for Shropshire, an official of the Court of Wards and Liveries. In 1546 he married Alice Gratewood (d.1603), the daughter of John Gratewood (d. 8 August 1570) of Wollerton, Shropshire, and Jane Hill. Alice was a niece of Sir Rowland Hill[5] of London and Hodnet, an official of the Worshipful Company of Mercers who had made immense wealth from the trade with the Netherlands.[6] Hill was the first Protestant Lord Mayor of London. Marriage was immediately followed by a welter of appointments that can only be explained by Corbet's greatly improved connections.

Robert Corbet (c.1477–1513) of Moreton Corbet, Shropshire, was the son of Richard Corbett & Elizabeth Devereux. He married Elizabeth Vernon. 3 sons, 4 daughters.

The Corbets' pedigree went back to knights who had accompanied William the Conqueror and become marcher lords. However, they were never ennobled, representing their county many times in Parliament. Leland estimated their landed income at £550 a year, a good sum, but one which placed them squarely in the gentry class.

He married Elizabeth Vernon (died 29 March 1563), daughter of Sir Henry Vernon of Haddon Hall and Tong and Anne Talbot, daughter of John Talbot, 2nd Earl of Shrewsbury. Elizabeth's father had been treasurer to Arthur Tudor, the Prince of Wales and Henry VIII's elder brother. Her mother's family were among the most powerful in the country, with large estates in Shropshire and Staffordshire.

Sir Robert and Elizabeth had three surviving sons. Roger's two brothers were both MPs:

1. Roger Corbet (c.1501–1538) was an English politician and landowner of the Tudor Period.
2. Richard Corbet represented Shropshire in the parliaments of 1558 and 1563.[2]
3. Reginald Corbet, a distinguished lawyer, Serjeant-at-law and Justice of the King's Bench, represented Much Wenlock in 1542 and Shrewsbury in the parliaments of 1545, October 1553 and 1555.[3]

Sir Robert also had four surviving daughters by Elizabeth: Jane, Joan or Anne, Mary and Dorothy.[4] All married into the local landed gentry.

Sir Robert died on 11 April 1513. His will made generous provision for his daughters, guaranteeing them their keep and 100 marks each their marriages, but left nothing specific for Richard and Reginald. Roger was his heir and was to inherit all his estates and half of his cattle and household goods, together with "my best salt with the covering, my best piece of silver with the covering, my best goblet and half my spoons."

• SUMMARY: The document below is the Prerogative Court of Canterbury copy of the will, dated 23 April 1509 and proved 16 November 1513, of Sir Robert Corbet (b. about 1477, d. 11 April 1513).
• The testator was the eldest son and heir of Sir Richard Corbet (b. 1551, d. 6 December 1493) and Elizabeth Devereux (d.15216), the daughter of Walter Devereux (1432-1485), 1st Baron Ferrers of Chartley, slain at the Battle of Bosworth on 22 August 1485. Elizabeth Devereux's nephew, Walter Devereux (born c.1489, d. 17 December 1558), 1st Viscount Hereford, the son and heir of John Devereux (c.1463/4-1501, 2nd Baron Ferrers of Chartley, was the great grandfather of Queen's Elizabeth's favourite, Robert Devereux (1565-1601), 2nd Earl of Essex.
