SIR THOMAS HASTANG, of Chebsey, co. Stafford, and of Leamington Hastang and Budbrook, co. Warwick, son and heir of Sir John HASTANG of the same, and nephew of Robert (HASTANG), LORD HASTANG, became v.p. by his 1st marriage of some importance. He was summoned for Military Service 30 June 1315, and was Knight of the Shire, co. Warwick, in 1316. In 1317 he had letters of protection on proceeding to Scotland in the retinue of Edmund, Earl of Arundel. On 20 January 1321/2 he was appointed to the custody of Bishop's Castle, but was ordered to deliver it to the Bishop of Hereford 6 February following. He was summoned to the Council of 9 May 1324 as from Gloucester, Salop and Warwick. On 19 December 1330 he was ordered to deliver up the castle, manor and hundred of Ellesmere, and on 26 January 1332/3 was going on a pilgrimage to Santiago. He was summoned for Military Service 27 March 1335, and on 6 July 1338 was in the Commission of Array, co.Warwick. He was summoned to Councils 25 February 1341/2 and 20 November 1342, but was not summoned to a regular Parliament.
He married, 1stly, before 28 March 1310, Maud, widow of John LE STRANGE, of Knokyn, 1st LORD STRANGE, before that of John de Stradling or Strattelinges, daughter and heir of John de Walton, of Little Wellesbourne and Walton Deyville, co. Warwick, by his wife Isabel. In 1315 Thomas Hastang and Maud his wife, previously wife of Sir John le Strange, of Knokyn, petitioned concerning the marriage of the son and heir of Madog ap Gruffyd Maelor, which John and Maud had bought for their daughter Elizabeth. She died in or before July 1325, by which time he had married, 2ndly, Elizabeth. On 29 January 1326/7 Elizabeth de Hastang for her good service had a grant of the wardship and lands late of Nicholas Kiriel (or Criol), tenant in chief, to hold until the lawful age of the heir with the marriage of the heir, and so from heir to heir till one should come of age. By a fine in 1334 the manor of Chebsey was settled on Thomas Hastang and Elizabeth, for life, and the heirs of Thomas. She was living in 1336. He was living 13 April 1345, but was dead in or before 1348. [Complete Peerage VI:341-3 as corrected by XIV:375, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
