Biography

  1. Notices and remains of the family of Tyrwhitt [signed R.P.T.]. Corrected and ... By Robert Philip Tyrwhitt. Page 21-22 < GoogleBooks >

The eldest son and heir of Sir Robert Tyrwhitt, who died in 1548, and his wife, Maud Taylboys, was

Sir William Tyrwhitt, Knt., Seneschal of the Priory of Gaykeswell and a Commissioner of Escheats, co. York (16 Henry VIII.); also with his next brother, Sir Robert Tyrwhitt, of Leighton Bromswould," one of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners for Lincolnshire (26 Henry VIII.). He was Sheriff of that county (28 Henry VIII.), and had large grants from the Crown on the dissolution of the monasteries. He married Isabella, daughter of Sir William Ascough, and widowfirst of Christopher Kelk, of Barnet-by-the-Wold, co. Lincoln, who died 1st February (11 Henry VIII.): and second, of William Girlington, Esq., son of Sir Robert Girlington of Normanby, near Briggs. [3]

By this lady Sir William Tyrwhitt had four sons and three daughters. He died 19th March, 1541, aged forty, and was buried in the chancel of Scotter Church. He probably resided on the Tyrwhitt manor and estate at Scotter, a few miles from Ketilby, during the lifetime of his father, Sir Robert, who survived him about seven years (dying, as we have seen, in July, 1548). …

1. Sir William's daughters were, 1. Agnes, wife of Sir William Hansard of Kelsey, co. Lincoln, Knt. (Inquis. post mortem, 8 Henry VIII.), by whom she had one daughter and heir, wife of Sir Francis Ayscough, Knt. ; 2. Katherine, wife of Sir Richard Thimolby, Knt., who died 2 Edward VI. (1549); and 3. Maud, wife of Henry Portington, Esq., of Portington, co. York.

3. See her will, dated 18th December, 1559, proved at Lincoln, 1st February following, by her fourth son, Marmaduke Tyrwhitt; also the Inquisitio post mortem for co. Lincoln of Christopher Kelk, taken 30th September, 1521.
