About Sir William Venables, of Bradwall

Sir William de Venables, also known as William de Legh, 2nd son, to whom his father gave all his lands in Bradwall between 1284 and 1287. He married first Agnes de Legh, dau and sole heiress of Richard de Legh of West Hall, High Legh, who was the widow of Richard de Lymme.  Her son from her second marriage, John Venables, changed his name to Legh, settled at Booths and gave rise to several branches of the Legh/Leigh family. 

Sir William married secondly Katherine, widow of Sir Randle Thornton and had two sons, William and Hugh.

1. Sir William Venables, Knight, of Bradwall, 2nd son of Sir William Venables, Baron of Kinderton, alive in 1300. •+ Agnes, daughter and heiress of Richard de Legh of the West Hall, High Legh. (Her first husband had been Richard de Lymme and her son with him took the name Thomas de Legh of West Hall). William Venables and Agnes had a son John, who became known as John de Legh.

The sixth in direct descent from the first Baron of Kinderton was Sir William Venables, who, by his wife Margaret, daughter of Sir Thomas Dutton of Dutton, had two sons, Sir Hugh, who inherited the barony, and Sir William, to whom his father gave the lordship of Bradwall, near Sandbach. This William was twice married, his second wife being Agnes, daughter and heir of Richard de Legh, of the West Hall, near Knutsford, and the widow of Richard de Lymme. By her he had John Venables, who, as previously stated, assumed his mother's maiden name of Legh.
