Stella Fast Horse was Oglala Lakota Sioux

Biography:
Born c. 1898 to parents Thomas Spotted Bear and Cecilia Deon Spotted Bear, Stella married Robert Fast Horse. Whit his she had two children, Vandell Williama and Sophia Dorothy before she experienced mental disorder and was committed. It appears that Robert married again, to Alice May Fast Horse (Garreau-Randall nee Hunter), a Sioux woman from the Cheyenne River Reservation.

In teh book Vanished in Hiawatha, Carla Joinson states that Stella was admitted to the Canton Asylum on July 30, 1923 which seems to correlate with the dates of birth of her children in 1920 and 1923. She was diagnosed with dementia praecox with catatonic symptoms (dementia praecox was a term used in the past to describe a condition that included catatonic symptoms such as a loss of interest in activities, a flat facial expression, and a lack of motivation.), later, about 1928, this was revised to manic-depressive (Manic depressive illness, also known as bipolar disorder, is a mental illness that causes extreme mood swings, or shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels.). The author also states that Stella became pregnant by another patient/inmate at St. Elizabeths in 1937, although provides no more information.

When the Canton Asylum closed, Stella was transferred on December 22, 1933 to St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington D.C. According to the 1940 and 1950 federal census she was still a patient/inmate at the hospital on those dates. Her date of death as well as palce of burial is not known.
