About Stephen H. Wiggins

son of Robert Wiggins and Hannah Hambleton

DEATH OF STEPHEN WIGGINS

A Respected Citizen Who Had Passed the Psalmist’s Allotted Four Score Years.

Stephen Wiggins, a well-known and highly-esteemed citizen of the lower end of this county, died at his home, Truce, Providence township, on Friday of last week, 21st inst. He had reached the age of 81 years just two days previously.

Mr. Wiggins was born in Colerain township, July 19, 1812. His education was obtained at an old school house at Chestnut Level. When he was twenty-one years of age he commenced life on his own account. On May 1, 1833, he married Miss Elizabeth Bowman, of Providence township, and in the following year he settled on a tract of land containing thirty acres, given to his wife by her grandfather. He added forty acres to it, all of which he cleared and improved. The first house he built on this farm was an old-fashioned log structure, which, in later years, was torn down and a comfortable frame dwelling erected, in which he lived until several years ago, when he rented the farm and bought a small property at Truce, where he lived with his daughter, Mrs. Hettie Shaub, up to his death.

Mr. Wiggins was the father of thirteen children, all living except one, grandfather of sixty-one grandchildren and great grandfather of sixteen great grandchildren. He was a good citizen, a kind neighbor and a loving father. The funeral took place on Sunday from his late residence. There was a large attendance of citizens and friends. Religious services were conducted at the house by Rev. A. P. Stover. The body reposed in a walnut coffin with appropriate trimmings. Old friends who knew him in health and strength hardly recognized him. The pall bearers were six grandchildren. Internment took place in the graveyard near Smithville.
