About Susannah Wolterton
Not a proven daughter of Edward Sheppard
Susannah died at Hartford in 1662 at the age of 75. They had no known children. [3] [6] [7]
She is buried in the Center Church Burial Ground (Ancient Burying Ground) at Hartford. [8] Her inscription reads: Here Lyes The Body of Susanna Woltertoun Who Died in the Year 1662 75 (partially damaged stone)[9]
[Note: her LNAB is unknown. Torrey speculated it might be Shepard, but no proof has been found. Other sources suggest she may have been a widow when she married Gregory Wolterton, as by her gravestone she was 4 years older than him.]
Last Name at Birth
"Receaved by me John Shepherd, of my loving Unkel Gregory Winterton, thirty four pounds, wch he receaved of my Bro: thomas Greenhill for lands I sold him, for wch I made my Unkel a letter of Attourney, I say receaved by me, Augst 4; 1654. John Sheperd.[1]
John Sheperd's brother Thomas Greenhill was his brother-in-law, brother of his wife, Rebecca (Greenhill) Shepard. John Sheperd's parents were Edward Shepard and Violet.
A 1993 article by Melinda Lutz Sanborn, R C Anderson and Dean Crawford Smith, titled "The English Woltertons," discusses the many theories of the relationship between Gregory Wolterton of Hartford and Edward Shepard who died in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They concluded that the relationship is unknown at this point. Although because the parentage of Edward is still open, the possiblity remains that Susanna might be a sister of Edward Shepard, or that Gregory had a Shepard wife before he married Susanna.[2]
