Thomas Gardner Sen'r of Salem sold to his brother George Gardner, living at Hartford in Connecticut, a parcel of land in Salem that was jointly laid out together with his as likewise a parcel of land bought "betwixt us" of Mr. Hilliard Veren Sen'r "joyningto ye aforesaid land," also all meadow there to belonging with all timber privileges. Dated July 22-1678.

He lived in a house which was situated on the easterly side of a lane running along the eastern boundary of the lot on which the meeting-house stood. This lane is called at the present time (1901) Higginson Square. The northern boundary of the lot was thirty-four feet from the Main Street.IT This estate was occupied by his widow after his death, and later by his son David."

He kept a general merchandise store, as we learn from the inventory of his estate which covers ten pages.

Among the articles sold were shoes, and he is called shoemaker and "cord winder" in the records. He also owned a " ketch " which he used in the cod-fishing industry.

He died in 1682, and the "worshipfull William Browne and Bartholomew Gedney Esq. and afliftants, Granted power of the adminiftration, of all & singular, the chattells goods & eftate of Mr. Thomas Gardner deceafed who dyed intestate unto Mrs. Elizabeth the relict & widdow, of the said Thomas Gardner, & to his Sonn Mr. Thomas Gardner, whoe are to bring an inventorye of the eftate soe farr as they cann" etc. They gave bonds to the amount of 500 pounds.

The following document was presented to the court on the 28th 9th mo. 1682:

"Wheareas Mr Thomas Gardner, is returned to this court, and joyned with his mother in law Mrs Elizabeth Gardner, administrator to the eftate of his father Mr. Tho: Gardner deceased his eftate & both bound in 500 pounds bond, to adminifter according to law ct. & it fufficiently appeering, to this court, that the said Thomas Gardner did object agst his ftanding any further obliged, by bond then to returne, an inventory to this court, which accordingly he haue don upon his oath given (together with the sd Elizabeth) : this court doe free the said, Thomas Gardner, from his said bond Oct."|

G. Andrews Moriarty, "Hannah, First wife of Thomas Gardner Jr of Salem, Mass.," in The American Genealogist, 26:108- writes:

"Thomas Gardner, Jr., of Salem... was born about 1615 and first occurs in the Salem records on 18:5:1637. He died prior to 29:1682. Married first, about 1641/2, Hannah ____, and their first child, Mary, was baptized in the first Church at Salem on 2:2:1643. Hannah died after 12:8mo:1644..."

THOMAS, Salem, merch. prob. eldest 8. of Thomas of the same, b. no doubt in Eng. rec. of the cb. 1639, freem. 2 June 1641, was a selectman, d. 1684. Hannah, prob. his w. is, by Felt, ins. among ch. mem. of 1649. Bapt. of his ch. were Mary, 2 Apr. 1643; Thomas, 25 May 1645, wh. d. 1695; Eliz. 22 Apr. 1649 ; Abigail, 20 Apr. 1651; Bethia, 26 Mar. 1654 ; Hannah, 24 Jan. 1658; and Jonathan, 12 Oct. 1662. There is a baptismal record of Thomas Gardner son of Thomas on 8 Mar 1617 in Sherborne, Dorset, England. Dorset History Centre; Dorchester, England; Dorset Parish Registers; Reference: PE/SH:RE1/1 </ref>
Thomas Gardner. Great Migration Begins, pp 733-734; Thomas, b say 1615 (adult 1637 when he received a grant from Salem [STR 1:52]; eldestson with a double share in his father's will); m1 by 1643 ____ Hapscott[?] (TAG 26:108, 30:157-58); m2 by an unknown date Elizabeth Horne, daughter of John Horne (TAG 26:108, 30:158-99).</ref> arrived in 1624 aboard the ship Zouch Phoenix “Ships from Dorset”, settling in Cape Ann and removing to Salem by 1626. Thomas was first mentioned in the Town Records of Salem in 1637 when "it is ordered that Tho. Garner Junor shall have 5 acres of land for a great Lot." Civic Duties and Other Court Documents

In 1649, he along with his brothers, George, Samuel and Joseph, were ordered to survey and measure from the meeting house to a meadow along the river Westerly from Salem and were allowed a portion of the meadow"for theire paynes."<ref>Gardner, Frank Augustine. Thomas Gardner, Junior, made his home on a lane known as Higginson Square which was situated on the east side just off the Main Street. The estate was occupied by his widow after his death and later by his son,David.<ref>Gardner, Frank Augustine. Debts were enumerated amounting to 439:05:00 and funeral expenses 22:05:00. Thomas Gardner Family

Thomas married twice. His first wife was named Hannah<ref>G. Andrews Moriarty, in "Hannah, First Wife of Thomas Gardner Jr. of Salem, Mass.," in The American Genealogist, 26:108 says, without citing a source, that this Thomas Gardner "Jr" died before 29:9:1682 (29 Nov 1682).</ref> and she is found in the records when she united with the First Church in Salem in 1649. Their children were; Mary, Thomas, Eliza or Elizabeth, Abigail, Bethia, Hannah and Jonathan.<ref>Gardner, Frank Augustine. Thomas Gardner, Planter (Cape Ann, 1623-1626; Salem, 1626-1674)and Some of Descendants: Salem, Massachusetts, Essex Institute, 1907;page 27</ref> His second wife was named Elizabeth and it is believed that her maidenname was Horne. Their children were; David, Susanna and Dorcas. Elizabeth, widow of Thomas, died intestate and although she lived in the home once owned by her husband, she did not own it at the time of her death as no real estate was included in the inventory, returned by John Horne and Henry West.
