Thomas Townsend migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1620-1640).

Biography

Origin

Thomas Townsend's origin is uncertain. Author Charles Hervey Townsend examined English records and was "satisfied" that Thomas was the son of Henry Townsend baptized at Bracon Ash, Norfolk in 1594.[1] Later authors, like Wiswall, view this assignment as "probable",[2] but Anderson in his Great Migration Directory still lists Thomas's origin as unknown. In a 1661 deposition Thomas gave his age as 60 years, which does not fit well with the 1594 baptism.

While some have suggested Thomas arrived in the New World in 1635 or 1637[3], the first records documenting his presence are from 1638.

Thomas Townsend was granted 60 acres of land with the Lord Brook and others by the town of Lynn, in 1638,[4]

Thomas "Townesend" was made freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony on March 14, 1638/9.[5] Thomas "Towenshend" was listed as juror at the quarterly court at Salem on 30 January 1641 (n.s.).[6] Thomas Townsend added his signature to a list of 34 others in a petition of Jane Arbitrage requesting to keep custody of her husband's tavern through a season, in spite of her family's financial hardship. The record is possibly from 1643.[7]

Children and Wives

Children of Thomas Townsend, possibly by multiple wives:

ii. SAMUEL, b. in Lynn about 1638. iii. JOHN, b. in Lynn about 1640. (Wiswall has 1644)[8]. iv. ELIZABETH, b. in Lynn about 1644; m. Samuel Mansfield, of Lynn, Dec. 22, 1669.(Wiswall has 1648)[8] v. ANDREW, b. in Lynn about 1654 (court deposition)[9] Thomas's final wife was Mary, and since he was named a brother-in-law of John Newgate in his will dated May 8, 1665, left a legacy of £10, to be paid within one year after John's decease,[1] some have decided Mary was a Newgate. But while John Newgate's baptism has been found, no baptism for a sister Mary has been found. Wiswall suggests that Mary wife of Thomas Townsend was instead a sister of John Newgate's third wife.[2]

It is almost universally accepted that he had more than one wife based on the consistency by Thomas in naming Mary his "now wife" in legal documents in New England. It is also assumed that this Mary was the mother of the 5 children listed in the biography section and married Thomas in England not too much before the birth of Thomas. This leads to the speculation that a few other Townsends known to be in Lynn or nearby, Lydia b. c 1630 m. Lawrence Copeland, Jr.; Mary b, c. 1633 d. 1661 " a member of Samuel Gardiner's family"[10]; and Robert of Portsmouth b. 1636 [11] were children of a previous wife.

A different scenario was proposed by Marica Wiswall Lindberg in which Mary was only the mother of youngest son Andrew.[12]. This is based on the precise wording of two deeds to youngest sons John and Andrew. In the deed to son John he is named "the natural son of the aforesaid Thomas Townsend" and the conveyance is "with the consent of his now wife Mary".[13]The wording of the deed to Andrew has this language "being the natural son of said Thomas Townsend' ... "together with Mary his now wife, she also being the natural mother of the said Andrew".[14] This difference in wording is almost certainly purposeful as all of his legal documents appear carefully written so as to leave no question as to their meaning. She assigns the other 4 children of the biography to this unknown previous wife.

Possible daughters Lydia and Mary could be those of this same previous wife or perhaps even another. If the birth years of Robert and Thomas are both correct, that would probably preclude Robert being a child of Thomas. But Lindberg makes the case that Thomas could have been born after Samuel, c. 1640, based on his later marriage to the younger sister of Samuel's wife.[15] If correct, that would leave room for Robert in the family. However, no mention is made of these possible other children in Thomas' legal documents so them being children of Thomas is highly doubtful.

Disputed Children

The three brothers John, Henry and Richard of Rhode Island and Oyster Bay, NY are often found as children of this Thomas.

These facts are disputed by findings of the "Townsend Surname DNA Project," conducted by the Townsend Society of America, a well-respected member organization composed of members with Townsend lineage.[16] These findings suggest that Henry Townsend, and by extension his brothers, were not the sons of Thomas Townsend and Mary and that these families have "completely different DNA" according to Townsend Society sources.

Based on these DNA findings, they have been detached as his children.

Activities

Aside from the 1638 grant at Lynn, Thomas owned other lands near the iron works and at Rumney Marsh, Chelsea. His town-house and lot of 7 acres was on the south side the mill street near the common, and next the Mansfield property, and it was sold by his grandson Thomas, son of Andrew, to Daniel Mansfield, of Lynn, July 25, 1702.

He calls himself husbandman in his well-drawn deeds of gift to his children, and from his serving the public on more than one occasion, seems to have been an important citizen, and from papers bearing his name, and his beautiful autograph, now to be seen in the secretary of state's office in Boston, we have sufficient evidence of his ability. He died in Lynn, Dec. 22, 1677, aged 83, and his wife Mary died of camp-fever, probably at the house of her son Andrew, Feb. 28, 1692.

The TowNsnENDS, or Townsends, are from one family, Marquis of Towrisend, &c. The first record found of any Townsend settling in this country (US) Thomas Townsend, who came from London, England, to Boston, and settled in Lynn, Massachusetts, in the Massachusetts government, in 1635. The Townsend or Townshend families of England and America are of mixed Saxon and Norman origin, and of great antiquity in the county Norfolk, England.

Thomas and Mary Newgate had five children..Thomas, Samuel, John, Andrew, and Elizabeth. Source..Genealogy of the Townsend Family by Charles Townsend Rich 1877. Thomas preceded his wife Mary in death. Tradition and family records inform us that Thomas Townsend came from London, and settled at Lynn, in the colony of Massachusetts Bay, about 1635, and as John Winthrop, his cousin, was governor of this colony, it is probable that his puritanical inclination caused him to select a home in New England, where many of his kinsmen and neighbors had emigrated a few years before. His wife was Mary, probably a sister of John Newgate or Newdigate, a merchant of Boston, who was born in Southwark, near London bridge, in 1590, and who in his will dated May 8, 1665, calls him brother-inlaw, and leaves him a legacy of £10, to be paid him within one year after his decease.

THOMAS1 TOWNSEND was born in Warwick, England and died at Lynn, Massachusetts 22 December 1677. He was made freeman at Lynn in 1639. He is thought to be the father of the three Townsend brothers, John, Richard and Henry, who were early settlers on Long Island (Savage). That they were brothers is certain: Elizabeth, widow of John, says in her will that she is acting with the advice of her husbands two brothers Henry and Richard Townsend. but the Memorial makes no mention of Thomas. Because of the large difference in ages between John and his younger siblings it seems logical to suppose Thomas had two wives.

Comment: the Oyster Bay Branch is now shown by Y DNA testing to be of different origin.

THOMAS1 TOWNSEND was born in Warwick, England and died at Lynn, Massachusetts 22 December 1677. He was made freeman at Lynn in 1639. He is thought to be the father of the three Townsend brothers, John, Richard and Henry, who were early settlers on Long Island (Savage). That they were brothers is certain: Elizabeth, widow of John, says in her will that she is acting with the advice of her husbands two brothers Henry and Richard Townsend. but the Memorial makes no mention of Thomas. Because of the large difference in ages between John and his younger siblings it seems logical to suppose Thomas had two wives.

Biography ==Tradition and family records inform us that Thomas Townsend came from London, and settled at Lynn, in the colony of Massachusetts Bay, about1635 (1637 according to records<ref>Filby, P. William, ed. Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s. Farmington Hills, MI, USA: Gale Research, 2012. 1308323</ref>), and as John Winthrop, his cousin, was governor of this colony, it is probable that his puritanical inclination caused him to select a home in New-England where many of his kinsmen and neighbors had emigrated a few yearsbefore.1 His wife was Mary, probably a sister of John Newgate or Newdigate, a merchant of Boston, who was born in Southwark, near London bridge, in 1590, and who in his will dated May 8, 1665, calls him brother-in-law, and leaves him a legacy of £10, to be paid him within one year after his decease.<ref>#Townsend|Townsend: Vol. 29, p. 102</ref>

1. THOMAS TOWNSEND was granted 60 acres of land with the Lord Brook and others by the town of Lynn, in 1638, and he owned other lands near the iron works and at Rumney Marsh, Chelsea. His town-house and lot of 7 acres was on the south side the mill street near the common, and next the Mansfiled property, and it was sold by his grandon Thomas, son of Andrew, to Daniel Mansfiled, of Lynn, July 25, 1702.
He was made a freeman March 14, 1639, calls himself husbandman in his well-drawn deeds of gift to his children, and from his serving the public on more than one occasion, seems to have been an important citizen, and from papers bearing his name, and his beautiful autograph, now to be seen in the secretary of state's office in Boston, we have sufficient evidence of his ability. He died in Lynn, Dec. 22, 1677, aged 83,and his wife Mary died of camp-fever, probably at the house of her son Andrew, Feb. 28, 1692.

Biography

Origin

Thomas Townsend's origin is uncertain. Author Charles Hervey Townsend examined English records and was "satisfied" that Thomas was the son of Henry Townsend baptized at Bracon Ash, Norfolk in 1594.[1] Later authors, like Wiswall, view this assignment as "probable",[2] but Anderson in his Great Migration Directory still lists Thomas's origin as unknown. In a 1661 deposition Thomas gave his age as 60 years, which does not fit well with the 1594 baptism.

While some have suggested Thomas arrived in the New World in 1635 or 1637[3], the first records documenting his presence are from 1638.

Thomas Townsend was granted 60 acres of land with the Lord Brook and others by the town of Lynn, in 1638,[4]

Thomas "Townesend" was made freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony on March 14, 1638/9.[5] Thomas "Towenshend" was listed as juror at the quarterly court at Salem on 30 January 1641 (n.s.).[6] Thomas Townsend added his signature to a list of 34 others in a petition of Jane Arbitrage requesting to keep custody of her husband's tavern through a season, in spite of her family's financial hardship. The record is possibly from 1643.[7]

ANDREW, b. in Lynn about 1654 (court deposition)[9] Thomas's final wife was Mary, and since he was named a brother-in-law of John Newgate in his will dated May 8, 1665, left a legacy of £10, to be paid within one year after John's decease,[1] some have decided Mary was a Newgate. But while John Newgate's baptism has been found, no baptism for a sister Mary has been found. Wiswall suggests that Mary wife of Thomas Townsend was instead a sister of John Newgate's third wife.[2]

It is almost universally accepted that he had more than one wife based on the consistency by Thomas in naming Mary his "now wife" in legal documents in New England. It is also assumed that this Mary was the mother of the 5 children listed in the biography section and married Thomas in England not too much before the birth of Thomas. This leads to the speculation that a few other Townsends known to be in Lynn or nearby, Lydia b. c 1630 m. Lawrence Copeland, Jr.; Mary b, c. 1633 d. 1661 " a member of Samuel Gardiner's family"[10]; and Robert of Portsmouth b. 1636 [11] were children of a previous wife.

A different scenario was proposed by Marica Wiswall Lindberg in which Mary was only the mother of youngest son Andrew.[12]. This is based on the precise wording of two deeds to youngest sons John and Andrew. In the deed to son John he is named "the natural son of the aforesaid Thomas Townsend" and the conveyance is "with the consent of his now wife Mary".[13]The wording of the deed to Andrew has this language "being the natural son of said Thomas Townsend' ... "together with Mary his now wife, she also being the natural mother of the said Andrew".[14] This difference in wording is almost certainly purposeful as all of his legal documents appear carefully written so as to leave no question as to their meaning. She assigns the other 4 children of the biography to this unknown previous wife.

Possible daughters Lydia and Mary could be those of this same previous wife or perhaps even another. If the birth years of Robert and Thomas are both correct, that would probably preclude Robert being a child of Thomas. But Lindberg makes the case that Thomas could have been born after Samuel, c. 1640, based on his later marriage to the younger sister of Samuel's wife.[15] If correct, that would leave room for Robert in the family. However, no mention is made of these possible other children in Thomas' legal documents so them being children of Thomas is highly doubtful.

Disputed Children

The three brothers John, Henry and Richard of Rhode Island and Oyster Bay, NY are often found as children of this Thomas.

These facts are disputed by findings of the "Townsend Surname DNA Project," conducted by the Townsend Society of America, a well-respected member organization composed of members with Townsend lineage.[16] These findings suggest that Henry Townsend, and by extension his brothers, were not the sons of Thomas Townsend and Mary and that these families have "completely different DNA" according to Townsend Society sources.

Based on these DNA findings, they have been detached as his children.

On March 14, 1639 his name was on a list of newly made freemen, a designation based on his membership in good standing of the Congregational (Puritan) Church, having made a solemn oath of allegiance to the Commonwealth and promising to uphold the laws thereof. This designation was important at the time because only freemen could vote or hold office. These qualifications were later amended so that men who owned a certain amount of property or had a certain yearly income could be eligible to vote.

Thomas and his wife Mary had five children, four sons and a daughter. They were:. 1. Thomas, born about 1637 in either Lynn, Massachusetts or England, died in 1700. He married Mary Davis about 1664, was made freeman in 1683, and settled at Rumney Marsh.. 2. Samuel, born about 1638 Lynn, died Dec 21, 1704 in Chelsea. He married Abigail Davis, served as constable and surveyor for the town of Lynn, was a respectable and prosperous man, and was made freeman 1683. Samuel joined the Second Church (Boston) Sep 18, 1681.. 3. John, born about 1640 Lynn, died Dec 14, 1726. He married 1) Sarah Pearson, 2) Mehitable Brown, was made freeman 1678, settled at Reading and worked as a wheelwright.. 4. Andrew, born about 1642 Lynn, died 1692. He married Abigail Collins July 18, 1678, lived in Lynn, and was made freeman Apr 18, 1691.. 5. Elizabeth, born about 1644 Lynn. She married Samuel Merriman (Mariam) Oct. 22, 1669.

It is unclear whether Thomas had more than one wife. Some accounts speak of a first wife and children named Robert and Liddia. On deeds of property given to his known children as they married, he speaks of ‘my now wife, Mary’. Thomas may have wanted to clarify that it was his present wife, Mary, who joined him in the deeds to their children and not any subsequent wife he might have. To paraphrase Donald Lines Jacobus, former editor of The American Genealogist, on the use of this term:.

When used in a Will, it is often assumed that the testator had a former wife. This may be true but is not necessarily so unless he refers to children by a first wife and children by his "present" or "now" wife. When the term is used without reference to children, it more usually means the testator is indicating that the bequest is intended only for his present wife and should not go to any subsequent wife he may have. This is one phrase that has confused many experienced genealogists..

It is unknown when Thomas married Mary Newgate. The oldest child Thomas was born about the year they arrived in Lynn, so they probably married in England. Mary was the sister of John Newgate, a merchant and selectman of Boston, who had land at Rumney Marsh. In Newgate's will dated November 25, 1664, he calls Thomas Townsend ‘brother-in-law’ and leaves him a legacy of £10..

On December 22, 1677 Thomas died in Lynn of camp fever (typhus) aged 83..

Thomas was a man of some importance at the time and his beautiful signature can be seen on many documents preserved by the Secretary of State's office in Boston.. As a respected freeman, he served as a juryman. His will is excerpted below:.

This indenture made the first day of January 1674 between Thomas Townsend Senior of Lynn in ye county of Essex of ye said son Andrew Townsend...being ye natural son of Thomas Townsend...with Mary his true wife and her also being ye natural mother of ye said Andrew, being both disabled, in a measure through age, to carry on theire afaires, for their comfortable livelihood....doth give...unto the said Andrew Townsend, his heirs and assines forever: at present two acres of land...situated and being in ye towne of Lynn, aforesaid on ye south side of ye mill street it being in front of ye house lott of ye said Thomas Townsend...together with all other estate ...the longer living of them may have possessed: to him ye said Andrew...upon these considerations following: . First: That ye said Andrew herby doth covern and promise to grant to his said father and mother that he will live with them as their child and carry on all their businesses for their comfortable livelihood.... Second: ...That if he shall marry and...with his wife, together with his father and mother cannot live comfortable together, that then ye said Andrew will build them a house upon ye aforesaid two acres of land and theire dwell and carry on theire aimes.... It may be judged meete and reasonable...that he will carefully see to them during both their lives, that they suffer not in any respect, neither in time of sickness or health...give ye honorable burial...debts may then be due, he will pay them.. And lastly that he will pay ten pounds to his brother Thomas Townsend and five pounds to his brother Samuell Townsend as legacies so ordered by his father for him to pay in three yeares time...five pounds per yeare...in case ye said Andrew should dy before his said father and mother, then ye said housing, lands and other estate as above said to return unto his father and mother or the longer lived of them, except ye aforesaid two acres only but if he shall dye and leave a wife or child.... The Townsends of Lynn, Massachusetts: Thomas, Andrew & Daniel. By James Neely Townsend.

In 1630 John Winthrop sailed to America with a thousand or so Puritans and settled near Boston. These were the first of many who were to follow in the next few years and call themselves the Massachusetts Bay Colony with Winthrop as their first governor.

Thomas Townsend, along with his wife and possibly their newborn son, left England about 1637 for the New World. He was forty-three years old. Thomas is considered to be the son of Henry Townsend and Margaret Forthe and was probably born at Bracon Ash, Norfolk, England where he was christened 8 Jan 1594/5. Thomas Townsend was connected to Governor Winthrop's first two wives: Mary Forthe and Thomasine Clopton. His mother Margaret Forthe was a cousin of Winthrop's first wife and his step-grandmother was related to the second. These relationships and the fact that the Puritans suffered under the rule of Charles I,. probably lead Thomas to seek a new life in the colonies.

Thomas and his wife Mary Newgate were granted 60 acres of land in the town of Lynn, Massachusetts in 1638. This was part of more than 800 acres that Lord Brook distributed in the Lynn plantation and was described as follows:. The Plantation of Lynn is situated on the northern side of Massachusetts, between Salem and Boston. It extends six miles on the sea shore and five miles into the woods.. The Southern portion is a long, narrow prairie defended on the North by a chain of Rocky hills. There is an abundance of water: having the Saugus river on the West, the ocean on the East and lovely lakes to the North. It is a place of beautiful groves, secluded valleys, and high hills. The forest is covered with ancient trees, untouched and never disturbed except by storms of the centuries. There is much wild life to be seen — Eagles, Deer, Fox, Wolves, and Wildcat. The lakes and streams are full of fish.. Truly, - - - This is a settler's dream!.

Thomas also bought land at Rumney Marsh in Chelsea and he owned a town house and a lot of seven acres on the south side of the mill street near the common. In the current township of Lynn, this seven acre lot is situated on the northeast and southeast corners of Franklin and Boston Streets and was next to the Mansfield property..

Thomas' land and house were located at the southeast end of Lynn near the Saugus Iron Works - the first iron works (1642) in America. His land abutted the Anchor Tavern owned by another early settler Joseph Armitage. This tavern was said to be the only ‘watering hole' between Boston and Salem and many notables stopped there for food and drink.

Records show that Thomas was a fine and God-fearing man. He was a farmer, a gentleman of intelligence and ability, and an outspoken liberal for his day. He and Reverend Samuel Whitney strongly opposed persecution and he was ordered out of a Lynn meeting for speaking out on the oppression of Quakers and others. He was in favor of his neighbor, Mr. Armitage, keeping an inn where strong drinks were served.

The son of HENRY & MARGARET (FORTHE)TOWNSEND, he was baptized on January 8, 1595 at Bracon-Ash Norfolk, England. He was mentioned n his father's will in 1625 and received 400 pounds. It is believed that he married a Miss Mansfield in England as early as 1629 and that she is the mother of his older children. He and his family may have immigrated as early as 1635, but probably closer to 1637/8; they settled in Lynn, Mass. It is unknown whether he married his second wife & my ancestor, MARY NEWGATE, before leaving England or after he arrived in the colonies.

He was made a freeman at Lynn, Mass. in 1639. In 1638 he had received a grant of land at Lynn of 60 acres with Lord Brook & others, and he later owned land at Rumney Marsh and Chelsea. He spoke out against the harsh treatment that the Puritans in Lynn & Salem gave the Quakers.

Life Sketch

The son of HENRY & MARGARET (FORTHE) TOWNSEND, he was baptized on January 8, 1595 at Bracon-Ash Norfolk, England. He was mentioned in his father's will in 1625 and received 400 pounds. His first wife was Elizabeth Mansfield, who was born in about 1602. They were married 05 Nov 1618 in London, England and she is the mother of his older children and the daughter of Andrew Mansfield and Elizabeth Walton, all of Bracon Ash. He and his family may have immigrated as early as 1635, but probably closer to 1637/8 settling in Lynn, Mass. It is unknown whether he married his second wife and my ancestor, MARY NEWGATE, before leaving England or after he arrived in the colonies.

He was made a freeman at Lynn, Mass. in 1639. In 1638 he had received a grant of land at Lynn of 60 acres with Lord Brook & others, and he later owned land at Rumney Marsh and Chelsea. He spoke out against the harsh treatment that the Puritans in Lynn & Salem gave the Quakers.
