Biography

William Chavis, Sr. was born in 1706 in Surrey, Sussex, Virginia, United States. His parents were Bartholomew "Shives" Chavis and Martha Chavis.

William married Francis (Gibson) Smith-Chavis. Together they had the following children: Phillip Chavis; Sarah Harris; Gibeon Chavis, of Granville Ocaneechi Saponi Nation; Lettice Snelling; Keziah Chavis; Fanny Chavis; Jordan Chavis; Thomas Chavis.

He died circa February 5, 1777 in Granville, North Carolina, United States.



"The land base for the Native American community in Granville, is mostly concentrated off of Fishing Creek and Tabbs Creek which run north off of the Tar River. Founding community member William Chavis (1706-1778), originally owned a continuous land tract that stretched all the way from Lynch Creek to Fishing Creek along the Tar River and went 5 miles north inland."
